So I recently picked up a Ruger SR9c as my new carry gun. I am using a Comp-tac M-tac style IWB holster.

As a side note I really like the leather of the comp-tac but would have preferred metal clips instead of plastic like I have on my crossbreed. Will give a review of the comp-tac in several weeks once I feel I have given it ample time to review properly.

As to finding the ammo I liked best for my carry I first started by asking other NES members what their Ruger preferred. After taking those recommendations into consideration I purchased the following types:

Remington Golden Saber 124 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point
Winchester Bonded PDX1 +P 124 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point
Federal Premium 147 Grain Hydro-Shok Jacketed Hollow Point
Federal Premium 124 Grain Hydro-Shok Jacketed Hollow Point

I went over to the club and set up my targets to see what results I got for myself.
Here is the overview:

I started with just loading up some standard rounds to warm her up:

Looks fine to me now lets get to the expensive stuff.

Next I went to the Golden Saber:

Shoot great, a little flame from the barrel in fact, none of the other loads seems to do that. Good grouping felt fine.

Next up the Winchester:

This was my least favorite out of all of them. Seems like I got a decent grouping but did not like the flyers I saw. Again no problems feeding and felt good when shooting.

Then i went to the first of 2 Federal choices the 124 grain:

I really liked the Federal - again no problems feeding. Just felt comfortable bringing back my point of aim after each shoot.

Last was the Federal 147 grain:

This ended up being my round of choice. No problems feeding, and I felt it shoot the best out of all the ammo I had reviewed.

I was very happy that the Ruger had no problems eating up each type I feed it. None of them seemed to cause any notable difference in recoil. I would feel confident carrying each one of these but based upon my own experience I am going with the Federal Hydra-Shok 147 grain, with the Golden Sabers as my secondary choice.

Nice info Max! I hope you like the MTAC (BTW, I dig the black leather). Once I got the position/cant right I always found it extremely comfortable and I never had any concerns about the plastic clips. Glad to see you're enjoying the Ruger!

Nice review. I also have an SR9c and don't really like the PDX1 in it either, now maybe I know of a few more options to try that worked for you. Thanks. [smile]

Thanks for the kind words guys.

I am still breaking in the comp-tac - on the 3rd day now. I expect to give it 2-3 weeks of daily wear so I can really get a feel for it. I am wearing it between the 3 and 4 O'clock position and it feels pretty good but the pants I wore today are a little tight at the waist :( lol

Nice review and write up. The Hydro-shok is an old bullet design; the other rounds you tested probably have better terminal ballistic performance through heavy clothing and/or barriers. I highly recommend trying the Federal HST. It's extremely accurate and 100% reliable in my M&P9c and all the penetration and expansion tests I've seen are excellent.

Check out the great info here: http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=19887

recent update here: http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?1624-New-9-mm-ammo-testing

I don't think he's tested the non-+P 124 (P9HST1, which I carry), but Federal's data only has it 50fps different in a 5" barrel, so it's probably even closer in a shorter barrel.

Yes I could not find any of the Federal HST (x4 shops) when I was picking up the ammo to run. I am keeping an eye out for it myself as I go from shop to shop.

Great write up! I use the Remington saber's in my Sr-9c.

Have you tried hornady's? The +p have jammed in my s&w 1911 once :/

I'm thinking about buying another case mail order. If you want some, I'm happy to pass them on at my cost.

Yes, decent review.

Clothing? Don't these things go through car windows and sheet metal without problems? I wouldn't be too concerned with clothing.

Unless I missed it, what was the distance you were shooting at? Nice write up.

Thank you, it was 15 yards.
I think I may go back in the next week or two and drop a couple more targets out there to post and show I can make better groups with it now. haha

The issue youll find is hollow points not expanding, rather just going straight through their target.

We have several inches of cloth clamped to a cardboard holder in the Box O' Truth, just to keep it together.

I can't say I've met someone wearing "several inches of cloth" ever. Have you? A down coat doesn't count, as that is mostly air. One needs to be realistic here.
