Personally I’m in MA so I’m SOL, but I’d love to not have to wear double hearing protection with my 308s. I’ve seen videos of really good suppressors on 308s online where the dB were lowered to below hearing damage levels which would be fantastic.

Anything they can take without giving something up in return is a win and allows them to move on to the next boogeyman. In the 70;s it was handguns. They lost that battle so they shifted to ARs that weren't even on the antis radar screen in the 70s.

The strategy also targets a narrow wedge of the pie for confiscation and surrender. Once that concept is introduced, accepted and implemented they can apply it to other things they ban.

If suppressors hadn't been part of the NFA odds are they'd be mandatory in new gun designs by now to prevent hearing damage. Look at how the military is moving to make them standard equipment because of the hearing loss issue and improved situational awareness/communication. They are going to pack the Supreme Court and chip away via bans every item they can think of until there are only revolvers and single shot shotguns, and only one per household. If you do the research, cans were taxed (not banned) by the NFA of 1934 not because of a fear of them being used in the commission of crimes, but the fear that the poor whites and blacks would use them to over hunt the areas that the rich white hunters wanted to preserve for themselves. A $200 tax back in 1934 would be just a tad below $4000 today. A rich hunter could afford that, but the “lower classes” certainly could not. The inclusion of silencers in the NFA of 1934 was pushed by William T. Hornaday, director of the Bronx Zoo. From David Kopel’s June 19, 2017 Washington Post article on the Hearing Protection Act:

According to Hornaday, one problem was that modern guns were too accurate. Also, hunters now had better scopes and binoculars. In Wyoming, hunters were using silencers so one shot didn’t frighten away other game.

Even worse, in Hornaday’s view, was who was hunting. Namely, lower-class Americans and immigrants. He urged new laws to “prohibit the use of firearms by any naturalized alien from southern Europe until after a 10-years’ residence in America.” Wildlife was vanishing because “the Italians are spreading, spreading, spreading. If you are without them to-day, to-morrow they will be around you. Meet them at the threshold with drastic laws, thoroughly enforced.”

In the South, Hornaday argued, the problem was hunting by “poor white trash” and blacks. In an earlier time, black Americans “were too poor to own guns.” But “the time came when . . . single-shot breech-loading guns went down to five dollars a piece. The negro had money now, and the merchants . . . sold him the guns, a gun for every black idler, man and boy, in all the South.” Hornaday favored an Alabama proposal for an annual tax of at least $5 a year on every firearm, to prevent poor people from owning inexpensive guns.

Hornaday argued that all pump-action guns should be banned, as should all semi-automatics and all “silencers.”

Though my wife and I have retired to west central MA, she still does some adjunct teaching at the colleges around Amherst, so I still have to deal with the “woke” anti-gun crowd. Whenever I confront them with this (the actual racial bias behind the inclusion of silencers in the NFA) they just mumble and try to change the topic. Being 2nd generation Italian (Sicilian to be more precise, in the old country we still differentiate from Italy) the anti-Italian discrimination exhibited by Hornaday and indirectly reflected in the NFA is particularly galling.
