Took the plunge and disassembled my HK USPc 40 S&W this afternoon. What a piece of cake. All you need to completely take this thing down is a strong set of tweezers and a punch.

Good to have it apart and clean out years of grunge stuck in places you can't get to sans disassembly, or some type of fully submerged solvent bath.

Used some 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper to remove high spots and burrs in the trigger mechanism. Put it back together in 10 minutes.

My unit does not have a safety - its SA/DA with no safety. I just ordered a new detente plate and lever to convert it to a variant that has safety. $45. Now that I practiced disassembly/reassembly, doing the conversion will be a snap.

After this, maybe some high visibility night sights.

Maybe a frame mounted laser?

is there a way to reduce the trigger reset length on USPs? Or reduce the grip length (move the trigger farther rearward?)

lol, me too! I think I read about an LEM trigger kit, but that makes it DAO. I am looking to reduce the trigger reset first, possible re-position the trigger to reduce the overall grip length second. Its only a problem for me in DA, but if its in SA, I can grip the gun comfortably and get enough of my bugger puller on the trigger.

Do the USP compact models have shorter grip lengths? Maybe grip length is not the right term, but the distance from the back strap to the trigger?

The USP compacts have a smaller grip circumference, but that's it.

On a regular USP the easiest way to reduce the trigger pull length is just to carry the gun in single action+ safety on/C1. [laugh]

If your hands are too small you are better off moving away from the USP series
altogether rather than trying to make the gun fit your hand.

can you tell me more? I have seen them - never in person or held them, whats the skinny? Will a person with little hands like me find that more toward my liking?

Well, the 2000SK is a mid/sub type pistol.

The P2000 is probably what you really want. It has interchangeable backstraps, etc. I kinda loathe the decocker on that gun,
though... then again I was biased because I owned a nice P2000 LEM at one time.

This Asian kid at BRP had one. It was a little too small for me, but my girlfriend loved it. The one I shot was 9mm but I think there's a .40 too. Very comfortable, and trigger reach was way shorter than all the other HKs, probably comparable to the Walther P99 grip, maybe a bit bigger. Accurate as hell. I think it's the standard issue pistol for French Police in 9mm (not .40, sorry EC). Saw one for sale for $800 once. Didn't have the cash.

Thank you all very kindly for the information. I think ill give the USP9 full size a few more tries and see if it grows on me. It really is a cool piece of equipment, functions flawlessly. (and sounds so evily-good when you let the slide slam forward) Just a little bulky and long reach for my tastes - and that trigger reset is awfully long.

one of the best things I did prior to acquiring my HK was to visit the Manchester Firing Line in NH, and rent all the firearms I had under consideration.

I rented:

an S&W M&P .40 (not bad)
a Sig 229 (did not like - sorry!)
a Glock 17 or 19 (can't recall which, but it was accurate, light)
an FNP-45 (awesome)
and the HK USP

Finally settled on the USP, but it was closely challenged by the FNP-45. Too bad the FNs are verboten in MA. Ultimately I found and bought a USPc .40

You might want to go to MFL and try a few of these out. Otherwise, you are also welcome to try out my USP-compact .40 at MRA.
