Is the Colt Archive the only way to find written (or online) proof of the manufacture date of a Colt pistol made after 1978?

I can't find any online resources despite an extensive google search. Is there a book or magazine that would provide this info?

Colt told me over the phone that my Government .380 pistol was made in 1985. But to get a letter from the Archive department costs $25 and takes a couple of weeks. I'd like to avoid that hassle if possible.

Thanks.

They will tell you over the phone for free? I have a Python that I've love to get dated. I can tell with some certainty (due to knowing the previous owner) it is from the late 50's early 60s, but would love to know more.

Yes, over the phone is free, hours are 10-12, 1-4 Eastern Time. A letter is $25.

Darn buyer backed out today. He insisted that I ship it from my FFL to his FFL and he get all his own paperwork cleared before paying for it. I couldn't make him understand that his position was unreasonable.
