I think it's likely the mother is the stabber.

"Helping with enquiries" is Brit and Aussie police speak for being questioned as a suspect (usually, sometimes as a witness).

The police also said: “As it stands at the moment there’s no need for the public to be concerned, other than it’s a tragic, tragic incident,”

Code for there's no madman running about. Just a tragic domestic incident.
