Greetings,

What should I expect to pay for a pre-ban stripped essential arms lower from the late 80's that NEEDS to be refinished due to very heavy wear on the finish. Looks like it is in very poor condition, but the seller says there are no dents or damaged areas and that it is in good working order. I am curious what it is worth from a private sale now that gun prices have fallen.

Thanks,
Steve

I'm guessing you're talking about the one you PM'ed the guy on in the classifieds. $400 isn't that bad assuming it's structurally sound. If you were to bring it somewhere to get it professionally refinished you'd probably be talking another maybe $100 or so probably a little less. Standalone preban lowers go for around 600-800 from what I have seen so it sounds fair to me. I would have probably bought it if the guy wasn't in western ma

it's only worth what some is willing to pay for it.

Being a pre ban it has some added value to someone who wishes to build what used to be available to us all for reasonable money.

what a basket case 67 mustang is worth to you, and what it is worth to someone else, is what you see in it's potential

I thought $400 was fair for that beat up one in the classifieds, although I don't know how hard it is to refinish one.

Complete pre-ban lowers (with a stock too) in good condition usually go for $600-800 IME. There really aren't very many around, at least that people are looking to sell.

I agree. They are typically sold as complete rifles and if someone is looking for one buying a complete preban rifle is probably their best bet. Just sell of the rest of the parts if you don't want them.

The Essential Arms lower is a cast lower and is considered the bottom of the barrel, IMO. I don't think 400.00 was a very good price. A better bet is buying a pre-ban rifle and selling the upper (particularly easy sale if the rifle or carbine is a Colt) if the upper is not to your liking.
