Just bought my first Glock and i'm probably the only guy who has problems re-assembling after a field strip. After i put the slide back onto the rails and slide it back, the take-down slidelock moves back down and the slide doesn't lock -- i have to do it over and over before it works right; can anybody help? Also, is it normal for there to be a bit of a gap between the slide and the frame. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but i want to make sure i'm not damaging the gun when i re-assemble.. Thanks very much for any help here.

The gap is normal.
I would think the only reason the slide lock would move down on it's own is because you didn't re install the slide lock spring.
Then again the slide lock needs the spring to be held in place.

Perhaps you don't have the barrel seated properly & it keeps pushing down on the slide lock as it moves back and forth.

I had the same problem when I first got mine. The problem was that the barrel was not seated correctly in the groove. There are 2 grooves on the back end of the barrel and you have to make sure it is seated in the right one.

You may also notice that the loaded chamber indicator tab is sticking out further than normal also. In this condition, the gun won't fire! I carried mine like that for 2 months after my first time at the range. Good thing I didn't need it because it would not have fired.

If the gun is apart, put the barrel back into the slide. Put the recoil spring/guide rod assembly back on under the barrel, you have to compress it to guide the back end of it into its little spot near the chamber.

You should then be able to take the whole thing and put it on the top of the gun, guiding it onto the rails from the front...... Then just rack the slide a couple of times and you're done.

If it's not this easy, then you did something wrong or something is wrong with your gun.

A gap between the frame and the slide is normal, but it's normally not that noticeable.

It sounds like a problem with the slide LOCK (P/N 23 from above referenced schematic) not the slide STOP, (P/N 24) Did you do a full disassemble, or just a field strip? Sounds like the slide lock spring is either missing, broke, or misaligned. Where you at?

Michael.
