It really shouldn't have taken me this long, but since I bought this rifle in February I've had a hard time warming up to it. Part of it has been the fact that I just wasn't getting good performance out of it with iron sights. I set it using the Improved Battlesight Zero method, but I've been getting dismal results. And that's in comparison to my $130 SKS, with which I can consistently take out clays off hand at 100 yards. I knew it wasn't the rifle because with a scope I was getting nice tight groups out to 200 yards. Totally frustrated, I picked Derek's brain at the shoot, and I explored his suggestion that the problem might be that I set the zero at 50 yards from a bench rest, and I may actually be dealing with 2 sight pictures between bench and off hand.

Simple concept, I know, but I'm still relatively new to rifles, and shooting in general, so it was something simple I overlooked. Well, yesterday, I went to No. Leominster and took a few shots at the target from bench, and they were right on, and then took a few from off-hand,and they were a few inches low. So, I set the zero off-hand and then went over to the 100 yard range, and found I was nailing clays off-hand as good as if I was using my SKS. It didn't hurt that Gibby Lashua was down there, which always makes me shoot at my best. Then I decided to put my poor spinner down there, and hit it a few times. Out of 10 shots, 6 hit it direct, making 10mm holes in the 1/4 thick steel and almost going through, 2 hit, and almost cut through, the vertical and horizontal support frame, and 2 went into la la land. I then took out 8 head-sized balloons at 200 yards from a kneeling position. I think I like this gun a little more now. Thanks Derek!

Using M855 ammo will damage steel. They steel penetrator core does a number on the metal. Finding a suitable replacement will ease up the wear and tear.

These are all reloads -- 23 grains of H322 under a Winchester 55 grain FMJBT. I'm not sure what's in the core. It's both the accuracy load and the max load, which I like. It heats the barrel up real good when I shoot it though.

Must be a mild steel. We have steel targets set up at our range but it was a steel that would take the punishment of repeated hits. M80 ball barely dented the steel. The M855 reloads put a deep hole very deep into the metal. But as the ammo was made to penetrate body armor it was somewhat understandable.
