Can someone explain why there are a ton of AR15s with birdcage flash hiders for sale at like every gunshop in CT, but this AK74 with a birdcage flash hider is illegal?

They are not flash hiders. By essentially welding a washer to the exit with a small aperture, you turn a flash hider into a muzzle brake.

The difference is that a flash hider creates a venturi so that cooling air is drawn IN through the cuts, which cools the blast and reduces flash.

By putting a small aperture on the same item, you create pressure inside the brake which forces gas OUT of the cuts.

You cannot tell this has been done by looking at a hider/suppressor in profile.
See pics below. Its all in the exit aperture.

Also, don't forget that regardless of whats on the end, it needs to be permanently affixed, either by welding or silver soldering. I prefer the later since it meets the requirements of the law but is removable without destroying anything. (It just takes an acetylene torch)
