I'm processing (2 cup portions, vacuume bagged) 20lbs of blueberries for the freezer and there's got to be a better way.

Who's got a food dehydrator, what do you use it for, what do you like about it and what could make it better ?

Ok that's four questions. [thinking]

We have a NESCO.....FD-60-Snackmaster-Express-Food-Dehydrator/

Primarily use it to dry fruit, herbs and the occasional jerky.... Got enough extra trays to stack it to the limit....

Who's got a food dehydrator - I do
What do you use it for - to dry fruit, herbs and the occasional jerky
What do you like about it - Relatively cheap and efficient.... Most food dries overnight and has adjustable heat so you can set drying rate accordingly
What could make it better - Nothing I can think of..... Works like a charm for us....[wink]

I have one of the cheap harvest master or something like that, it does okay for what it is but http://www.excaliburdehydrator.com/
is really the way to go if you want to process in any quantity

I have the nine tray excalibur and it works very well for everything from recharging dessicants to making jerky and 'sun' dried tomatoes.

It's been worth the money for me.

Got the same one and it's been great! Use it for 20+ lbs of meat, use it for fruit leather & apple crisps so far. I mean to use it for dog treats and more stuff, just been busy. Check out my thread here, got a small note on it;

I have NESCO something. also maximized the trays count.
use it mostly for jerky. my wife made fruit strips for the little one once or twice.
only problem i have it's noisy and smells up the house with whatever you are dehydrating.

Only problem I have with the smell is that it makes the wait for them to finish so I can eat them feel that much longer haha.

What problem are you having with the vacuum bagger?

Nothing. It's just that 20 lbs of blueberries takes a bit of time to process.
MrsTwigg prefers 2 cup portions as most of her recipies call for 2 cups.

Its just a pain in the butt washing, drying, (and keeping the squirrels & birds away) then freezing them on trays and bagging.

Thought I'd try drying them.

Twigg,

I have the 9 tray excalibur. If you want to try it for a week, let me know.

I never thought to use it for recharging dessicants. Thanks!
