So my friends bought an old house, from an old guy, and as they are doing renovations, they found an old gun.

I think it functioned at one point, it is a flintlock of some kind.

Any idea what it is? Also, how does one check if its loaded? I don't think it could possibly fire, but the four rules are the four rules. I also discovered that my friends have apparently never heard of the four rules [hmmm]

Jezail? Looks eastern, anyway.

You can tell if they're loaded by sticking the ramrod down the barrel. Figure out how far down it should go on an empty chamber by holding the ramrod alongside the barrel. Mark that depth with painters tape at the muzzle, then slide it all the way down. If the tape doesn't touch the muzzle when you put it in for realsies, it's a good bet there's a charge down there.

Does look Turkish.

Hard to say why, though.

Nice find !

Not a dig, but it looks crappy enough to fire. I buy stuff to fire that is sound, but so ugly that I don't care if it's ruined. As long as it doesn't hurt me !

But I suppose that's a dig. If I looked at it more closely I'd probably love it.

Damn shame there's no story behind it ! (so make up a cool one for your kids)

I'll start one for you:

Great Uncle Ebenezer was born in Staffordshire, right west of London. Being a poor lad, he joined Her Majesty's Army, and due to outstanding service during the Battle of Blah Balh, advanced in Rank to a Superior Whatever. During the course of his duties he soon met a buxom young Turkish Noblewoman, who found this English Gentleman a wonderful companion, and...... (must insist on Yuengling 24 pack for next chapter).

On an empty flintlock, should the ramrod reach the flash pan? Cause this one didn't.

If the rod doesn't reach the hole in the barrel where the spark gets in, it IS loaded. Pour some oil down the barrel and let it sit for a few days. Get a good ramrod with a screw on the end and see if you can pull the charge (Whatever it is) out.
