So someone on another board is offering me a trade for my S&W 19-2. Though I haven't decided to strike a deal with him, I am looking for some advice. The gentalman has offered me my choice of either a;

Savage FP110 police tactical with a heavey barrel chambered in .308 NATO w/ a Bushnell 3x9

Or

Ruger M77 MKII VLE law enfocement tactical also chambered in .308 NATO. The barrel on the gun has be professionaly cut down to 18" from 26" and has been re-crowned as well.

First, does anyone think this is a fair / average trade or in my best intrest?

Second, would the barrel being cut on the Ruger compomise accuracy?

Third, which of the two would you go with or should I wait for another bolt to come around or wait to see if an AK comes my way?

The Rugers design is what compromised its accuracy, not the cut down barrel. I'd take the Savage over the Ruger.

If you want a bolt gun, then why wait for an AK? Two very different types of firearms.

YMMV,

Well, I will chime in. I would go with the Savage. I think it is a fair enough deal and it is a great rifle. The Ruger is a decent rifle, but why an 18" barrel? There are better choices for a carbine barrel length rifle. Of course if you are really looking for an AK then I am way off. I love Savage rifles!

BJ... food for thought with bolt actions... what kinda scope are you going to put on that gun? If you're just going to put a junker on there, save yourself the trouble...

I had a savage 110FP and loved the rifle, but the glass I had on it was junk and didn't have numbered/metered adjustments. I ended up selling that rifle eventually, but it was only because I couldn't afford to put decent glass on it. The rifle shot well (made great groups, especially with Fed GM 168) but the functionality of the glass just annoyed the hell out of me.

You can buy a new Savage; you can't buy a new 19-2. (I agree that the Savage is a far better rifle than the Ruger.)

I guess the real question is whether you want a 308 bolt action at all. If you do, I would go with the Savage. It's an easy rifle to work on and modify, Savages usually have excellent accuracy out of the box. I had a Ruger 77 MkII, which wasn't a bad rifle, but never developed the accuracy I was looking for. The Ruger was a better looking rifle, but that odd screw layout in the trigger guard was difficult to bed correctly. I'd also rather have a barrel longer than 18" in 308.

I think you shot my Ruger M77 Mk2 at the Middleboro pumpkin shoot years ago. Mine is chambered in .204 Ruger and is extremely accurate with a Super Sniper scope. Its got a great trigger and the bolt is smoother than most Savage rifles I've tried.

Only thing that makes me leary about the one you mentioned is the cut down barrel.

I'd go with the Savage and have always wanted one of the Police 110 models with Choate stock. I'm currently trying to get a guy I know to sell me his .223 model.[grin]
