Have a .40 Full Size.

How rugged is this gun? Should I be real worried about rain/dust/fire?

Ok...maybe not fire.

Anyone have input?

I don't own an M&P... but have heard nothing but good things about it (except for the MA trigger)... for what it's worth.

As others have said, clean it when you get it home and have fun.

A very reliable gun.

I clean mine once a year weather it needs it or not.[wink]

send it out for a trigger job and shoot it! Clean it once a year or every 1000 rounds whatever comes first!

I've probably put close to 4k rounds through mine by now. Rain, dust, dirt, sand, snow, yep, been through all of it. Runs like a champ.

I had a full size. The only issue I had with it was that I couldnt conceal it very well. So I got the compact. I do wish I kept the full size for range use as the compact isnt very accurate at longer distances....but for self defense its fine.

Just keep it clean and lubed and your all set. Had about 1000 rounds thru mine.

The M&Ps have gone through extensive extreme testing in hopes to become the next military sidearm. They likely subjected them to far worse than you would ever dream of.

One of the unique issues was a slight dimentional difference between the black and dark earth at extremely cold temps which delayed the Dark Earth color for a few months.

S&W was betting the farm on the success of this pistol and the LEO/Military contracts they wanted to capture. By all accounts, they nailed it.

I'm thinking of getting the full size, since I've heard so many good things about it. But I learned to shoot on a 1911, and like a manual safty if we're talking less than 10 pound trigger weight (which we are, given a Derr trigger job).
Has anyone seen the M&P 9 with the thumb safety available in MA?

tough gun, accurate, comfy grip....but im not sure why you want it to be fire resistant...i wouldnt want to test that out

I have an M&P 45 that I have put about 1000 rounds of SWC lead reloads through with only one FTF. This occured AFTER I had trimmed four coils off of the recoil spring to get it to function with 140 PF loads. Cutting the coils was a bad idea and most likely responsible for the failure. Wolff now has a selection of springs and a guide rod (which you must use with their springs) available for the M&P 45. These items are not listed on the web site; if you are interested you have to call.

Reliability is affected by many factors. I wouldn't expect a gun to endure anything in the real world that I had not already subjected to myself in testing/training.

I bought my full size M&P .40 about over a year ago. Put about 500 rounds through her. And my personel experience it feels and points in my hand better then my GLOCK's (owned 6 of them over the years). I can't tell you if its more rugged then a GLOCK, but in my hands it hits what ever I point it at, and goes bang every time.

I picked up a full sized M&P 45, very nice gun, but it came from the factory with 4-5 blemishes on the slide and inside the chamber. I really like this gun, even with the MA trigger (and the 45C as well-both were 100% reliable and accurate) and think it's a winner, but I shoot my Glocks better and my G21SF in particular, way better. No knock on the M&P, I think it's a fine gun, a blend of the best of the Glock and Walther P99 designs.
Does anyone feel the durability is there that Glocks have? The Glock trigger mechanism seems simpler, less to go wrong.
Oh, also, IMHO, I think the dark earth model 45 with the ambi safety is a perfect military sidearm and I'd love to see our military go to it. It'd be cheaper than the M-9 as well, I'd think and as reliable and more durable. And harder hitting as well.

A stock (non MA) trigger spring will reduce your pull by about four pounds for $2.75.

I think that the M&P s a more rugged design than the Glock; much stronger slide to frame connection.

I also think that the M&P is no more complicated than the Glock; I have detail disassembled both.

I agree that the M&P would make the ideal service weapon, but would not go with the thumb safety, but rather the MA trigger, if necessary.

From what I understand if you buy an M&P with the thumb safety it has the normal 6.5 LB trigger. It is only the gun without the safety that needs the Mass 10 LB trigger.
