I bought an extended mag release from topglock :

http://www.topglock.com/catalog/competition.htm#extendedcontrols

But the package shown here : http://www.topglock.com/images/mrs_black_straight.jpg

Is not what I got, I only got 1 screw! Even though its pretty tight with only 1 screw, I wanted the other.

Dealing with topglock is like pulling teeth, they gave me a number to "T.H.E. Accessories" who apparently makes the part, and its a "unknown" number with blank voice mail that has been full for a week or more, so you can't leave a message.

Extensive googling can't find any company called "T.H.E. Accessories" etc.

Anyone know where I can buy one of those hex screws? topglock has totally blown me off, so.. yeah.

Two things,

1. When I once was weak and bought a Glock, I had dealings with Top Glock and had good luck. Things change.

2. David Sevigney is one of if not The top glock shooter in the country. Ask him about extended mag releases [wink] He will politely tell you about a match start that required the gun loaded on a table mag inserted. The weight of the gun released the mag and cost him a national Championship if I remember correctly. I think he finished second.

To answer your question on the screw, I would check a local hardware store for starters. You will need to know the size and thread but Brownell also has a very complete selection of screws.

I am not implying that either of you are lying. But my G34 will not release a mag simply by the gun's weight on the extended mag release. On the other hand, since it is extended I suppose some addition pressure on the gun while picking up could cause a problem.

One other thing... I love Glocks. [wink] Serously though- I know they aren't for everyone but they are truly awesome guns IMO. Reliable as all hell, easy as heck to strip and plenty accurate.

I realize your experience is probably more diverse than Dave's, but since he is sponsored by Glock, shoots Glocks world wide, is noted as a trainer and competitor, I will take his word for it. (I was at the match also) [smile]

Ouch- that hurt. I doubt he has a "tricked out" mag release spring. I'd also be willing to place a small bet with you that I can put my loaded Glock 34 on a table and not have this problem- I'll do it 5 times. Oh- and I wish like hell I could shoot like him. [wink]

Once you get rid of that pesky flinch, you'll be on the road to pistol competition success!

Don't we all. Quite a few years ago I was squaded with Sevigny at an IDPA match at S&W. To say there was a vast gulf between our skill levels is a gross understatement.

Yeah... the flinch is almost gone... but somehow I just don't seem to get the times Sevigny does. I need to work harder. Or find out how he cheats. [smile]

Not to get off topic but I heard from some Harvard, MA Area 7 shooters that he is the most helpful and humble guy you could imagine. It's nice to see that from a professional. I think I could still offer him some help in picking up his Glock without dropping mags though. [laugh]

It was supposed to hurt [slap] That should help your flinch [wink]

My point was all it takes is one time. You are probably no where near as aggressive as Dave is and will have no problems. I would also wager, the extended release you have is the Glock release not the one shown by the OP which is very much oversized, not legal for IDPA and not legal for USPSA Production. In a carry holster, there is a good chance it will release the mag (I have tried one when shooting L10 for that short weak period of my life [wink])

David shoots the same with an out of the box Glock. I had a chance to talk to him before he went to shoot for Glock. He is one of the finest representatives of the sport you will find.

My statements on this are based on first hand knowledge of the release the OP has and of what I have seen and experienced. Take them for what they cost you. Just sharing experience, not supposition.

Yes- I don't have one that is in the original post. Just the std extended mag release that comes with the G34. I agree with you about the "all it takes is one time" for sure. I still think it wasn't the weight of the gun that "released" the mag... but his additional force when grabbing the gun. Point taken though.

Oops. Is there an IDPA legal mag release thats better then the one I've bought? I'd like to get a better mag release, but one thats IDPA legal.

From the IDPA rule book:
NOTE: The slide releases and magazine releases that are standard on the Glock 34 and 35 models are available as a factory option on all Glocks available in the USA. Because of this, that type of slide release and magazine release are legal on all Glocks for SSP.

If you must have an extended magazine release on your glock, get the Glock OEM part. That is the only one that would be IDPA legal:

One of my squad mates at AWARE one year (the other great Glock shooting, Dave ) had mags drop from table starts when using an extended mag release. I think it happened on two consecutive stages.

It can happen with 1911s too. Use an extra power release spring from Dawson.

I had trouble with the extended slide stop on the 35 as well.

Also, if you have an extended release, check your weak hand only grip (left hand only, if you're a righty) with it. I was always fine with an extended button but as I improved my weak head only shooting, my grip on the gun changed and I found the button getting depressed and mags dropping when I didn't want them to.

OK- I'm being serious here. Do you think they are dropping mags because when they go to grab the gun with their strong hand (righty) that they are pushing down too hard while getting a grip? I'm having trouble thinking how they fall out so easy othewise..

Of course... now that I've said this... I'm sure it will happen in my next match. (I'll try this before hand. [wink])

In those cases, it is happening because the gun is resting on the extended button like a kick stand.

Best description I have read. Thanks Steve

Add one thing. These are usually USPSA matches where the gun weighs more due the the mags being full. It also doesn't take a lot to get a mag to release enough that it will not drop out but it also will not feed.

Being a lefty, that's one problem I don't really have to worry about. :)

Gee, did I just see a factory Glock part in the post above for less than $2.00? Not too many other Mfg's have so many parts available so cheap...

As Steve witnessed, it happened to me at least a couple of times at AWARE that year and as I recall, it was enough of a time waster (two extra unplanned reloads) to cost me winning my class. With the extended mag basepads, the weight of 20 rounds of 40 s&w adds up. I'm not sure if it was just the weight of the gun, or the additional pressure of my hands as I was picking up the gun - the result was the same - draw and shoot the first round while the mag drops to the ground. Now, being a right handed shooter, I place the gun on the table with the mag button up (like a lefty would), and while picking up the gun with both hands I just transition the gun to my right hand as I come up to the targets. YMMV

You still have many others to overcome [laugh2][laugh2]

Can't argue with you there. But, after spending all day at the A7 match squadded with my "buddy" Dave S. I can now say I've seen how it's "supposed" to be done. I have a lot of work to do... :)
