Going to hit the Maine north woods come grouse season. Looking to fondle a few options before settling on one. 20 gauge o/u, along the lines of silver pigeon, citori, or similar.

The few local shops I go to are primarily pistol and AR oriented. Would like to hear where you folks go for eye candy and fitting advice.

Thanks

Robin Hollow is certainly a great place, even if just to rubber neck around $50k+ shotguns, but in Rhode Island. As you are headed to Maine, you may want to check this place out:

COLE FINE GUNS & GUNSMITHING

They are renown for their gun fitting.

Kittery trading post has the best inventory I know of. They don't do much as far as "fitting" goes......but I've never had a shotgun "fitted" and I have no problem shooting grouse, pheasant, clays, or rabbits.

Not sure how far you are from there......but the 72 hour wait to taken possession may come into play.

KTP is where I grab my license. In all honesty I don’t know much about the fitting either. I’ve never had issues before putting a stew together after a day afield. The stakes are a bit higher now with the 6 hour drive and relatively short season for me as it runs into deer season. That said, I’ll take all the help a good fit will provide!

I picked up a used Browning 12ga Cynergy CX composite for my new Quacker wacker this season. I got it the day after the 3 day waiting was enacted, it felt strange not leaving with it. I was going to NH the following weekend, so I picked it up on the way up. In a nut shell, they gave me a great discount on an already very discounted price of a used gun. So I would keep Kittery in play, if the ride isn’t bad.

If you want fitting.....Coles.

KTP has a good selection as others noted but now has a 3 day wait which sucks ass, Robin Hollow overpriced, but they have shit you wont see anywhere else if you have little care about your wallet. Or want an old gun that is made of unobtainium.

If you know what you want....buy online. Most Standard B guns are similar unless your going for high grade. I save at least 3-400 buying online at places like Battlehawk. I just priced a Citori 28 gauge Lightning and they were like 400 dollars less than KTP, that shithole Cabelas.

Mark is spot on, no sales tax if you buy on line. I’ve bought a few from there these guys

Forgot about Joel...he's got some nice stuff and you can paruse the wood you like....

No reason not to buy a fine over/under if you want one, but be aware that those birds explode out of cover and are gone pretty fast. A fast handling gun that comes to the shoulder naturally will increase your odds. I have a 50-year old Ithace 37 in 20 gauge that's under 6 pounds and seems to bring itself to point without my thinking about it. YMMV, but I'd put weight and balance at the top of the list. Good luck. I'm envious.

Exactly what I use for my workhorse gun for pheasants. 37 in 20 is light and fast. Wish I had one in 28.

As others have said KTP has a good selection. Walk the aisles and look closely at the inventory. It’s mostly organized but there’s a lot that’s out of place. Prices are good compared to Mass. I’m talking shotguns in general though, not sure about your particular need.

Off the shelf sp3. It’s lit a fire to acquire more break open shotguns. Have some clay lessons coming up at Addieville so im sure a stop by Robin Hollow is inevitable.
