So I just sold a few guns I dont really shoot anymore and am looking into getting a nice .357 revolver for CCW. Im thinking at least a 4 inch barrel so I can shoot it at the range and it has to have a good finish and comfortable grip. Never been into revolvers, this would be my first one...ANY RECOMMENDATIONS? Looking to spend about $500
Thanks

wait what was the question?

CCW revolvers are typically of the snub nose variety, with a berrel length under 2"
That doesn't mean you can not carry a 4" barrel revolver, but it is on the larger side.
The S&W 686 is the standard 357 revolver that others are judged by, but new they are well over $500. At that price point look at the Ruger GP100.

SP101. I carry the 2.25" barrel, just get a good belt and it will take the weight off. Never had any problems with it and it is easy to take apart. I believe Four Seasons has some with the 3" barrels in stock for just under $500.

...And plenty of aftermarket grips you can get for it. The stock one is pretty comfortable.

If you do some major bargain shopping in the classifieds and the used section of your LGS, yes. I've seen them that low, but usually they float around $575-$625.

I have a couple of different barrel length Ruger SP-101s. Both the 2.25" and 4.2" ones I have carry easy, are relatively light, and point well. They're good guns, and used they both go for less than $500.

If you want to come try them both (and their little cousin the LCR) before you by, drop me a PM and we can hit up Southborough R&G or MFS.

I have the 4 inch barrel 686 and I love it. Solid comfortable shooter. I got one in here for $600. It's my welcome to my house at 3am after you broke down my door. Reliable and well built. Spend the extra 100 and pick one up. Ruger is good as well but the smith fit my hands like a glove. I also picked up a 617 which is the same frame but in 22 so I can practice shooting double action. Never a revolver guy but the smith changed my mind. That's my vote

Ruger makes an SP101 with a 4 inch barrel and adjustable sights: KSP-341X 5771 357 Mag 5 Fiber Optic Adjustable 4.20" 9.12" 29.50 oz. $699.00

It is on the Mass Approved List and you can order one from a dealer. Price should be below MSRP by a considerable margin IMO.

Otherwise I would suggest an SP101 with the standard 3 inch barrel.

These guns are a little heavy but can double both as an EDC and a range gun.

This message is brought to you by your friendly Ruger stockholder [thumbsup]

Another +1 on the SP101. I rarely carry a wheelgun but I had one of these a few years ago. Very nice guns. Solid, reliable, easy to disassemble (if you ever actually needed to). Mine had a bobbed hammer and 3" bbl, excellent for carry but I just never got used to carrying a wheelgun IWB.

I'd say go with the 3" barrel. I have a 3" Model 60 S&W which has a long enough barrel to be accurate/fun at the range, yet fits comfortably in an IWB holster. The SP101 3" is the ruger equivalent and will be closer to the $500 price point. 3" barrel is a great middleground without having to compromise for either of the two needs, range/carry.

Thanks for the advice makes sense

I remember Jose mentioning that the 3" barrel S&Ws have a full-length ejector rod, as opposed to the shorter rod found on 2 1/2" and under barrels. Makes ejection of spent cartridges much smoother.

I know you said you wanted a revolver that would be fun for the range, but the ruger lcr in .357 gives you a ton of fire power in a very concealable package. My father owns one and although its a bruiser on the range it's very comfortable to carry and if you ever have to draw it you know it will get the job done. Also they are very affordable around 400ish I believe.

Thanks everyone for the advice probably gonna go with either the sp101 or gp100

Excellent choice. SP101 is much better for CCW.......and I shoot mine OFTEN at the range and it is fun and accurate. GP100 imo is better for home defense as it is a bit bulky for daily carry. My sp101 has been on my hip for well over a year now and I feel well armed.

I'd go with a K frame. Either the model 13 from above or the model 19. I've got the model 19's weaker brother the model 15 with a 4 inch barel - .38 only. It is big enough to be comfortable to carry - with appropriate clothing (I'm an OWB guy, so shorts and t shirt don't quite work) but still comfortable on the range.
