My father and brother live in Connecticut. My son and I live in MA. We are thinking of driving down to CT this coming Sunday to do some shooting together. Can someone suggest a good Public (pay for) range where we can shoot together?

Any legal issues I should be aware of in CT? My father says "don't worry about bringing your guns. I'll bring plenty for everyone." [grin]

Where do they live?

My favorite, and most local, is HighRock. But its be absolutely NUTS there lately, long waits, way too many people.

I am a member at Highrock, it's near waterbury, about an hour from old saybrook. Its a real safe/clean friendly place if I do say so myself. albeit quite crowded on any given weekend. If i wasn't workin this weekend Id invite you up for an early session before they open to the public at 9am. Come to think of it,... are you going to be around anytime the next week? I am off Tuesday and Thursday and could be persuaded to do some midweek plinking.

The only other real option is "Ye ole" Blue Trail in Wallingford. they are back open and have a very well stocked range store.

you might try hoffman's new indoor range on the berlin tnpke. hartford. Call first as i am sure there are probably quite a few restrictions. Nice poiint is they let you rent guns to try out. Could be fun to fondle a few you might never think bout buyin without tryin.

there is also an indoor range somewhere round guilford, I forget the name. I heard bout them from some guys at a plate shoot at the newhaven sportsmans club but I hav enever been there myself.

Thanks kerismo.

I would like to do some "midweek plinking" but I live in MA. Again, I'm just trying to get together with my father and brother in CT to do some shooting. Thanks for the tip on the Blue Trail range. We will give them a call.

I wonder if other parts of the country find it this hard to get family together and shoot. New England just sucks with the patch work of laws we have in place. I mean seems to me as American as apple pie to want to go out for a day a shoot some targets with family.

We want to do it in a safe and lawful way. Two of us are veterans for god sake. The younger members of the family just want to experience the fun of the sport. Anyway, it is frustrating.

Well if your ever up round Waterbury and want to burn some powder, drop me a line.
Good luck to you.

I just stopped by the Blue Trail for the first time last week with no problems. I just moved from the south and am surprised by just how difficult it is to find a public range that has multipurpose ranges...looks like every public range I've been here have been static. Nice thing is that Blue Trail is an outdoor public range (can't stand shooting indoors) and they pretty much leave you alone to your own devices once you sign in.

I'm curious, why do you folks want a public range, vs. a private range? What is the difference? (sorry I'm new to all this)

I'm thinking of joining the Metacon gun club, that's a private club. I looked at the prices though and they were much lower than the Hartford Gun club and Wolf's range. Other than that I don't know. So I'm curious about that then (see above [grin] )

As a follow-up to this I ended up going to the Hartford Gun Club. However, we only had a short time there as we were guests.

Anyway, it was a nice setup. After my wife saw it she started talking smack about my gun club up here in MA (Maspenock). In Hartford they had around 9 skeet shooting ranges, handgun range with tins, pins and paper targets and 200 yrd rifle (I think it was 200. Only shot 5 rounds of my brother's M4 there.)

Next time I'm down in CT we will be going to Blue Trail. $27 a person sounds a bit much but hey. Shooting together makes a family stronger. [smile]
