My left-handed Savage Mark II .22 rifle should be in stock in the next few days. I want to buy a scope for it before trying to fit iron sights. I realistically see myself shooting 50 foot, 50 yard and max 100 yard targets.

I have seen the Mueller AVT and APT 4.5 - 14 x 40mm recommended (although I am not sure of the real differences between the two except fancier knobs on the tactical model.

smack dab in the middle of the price range is the Nikon ProStaff Rimfire 3-9 x 40. Obviously it has less magnification, but I am not sure which is a better scope among these three, any recommendations? Any others I should consider around $150?

Nikon ProStaffs are nice for the money; it's not a big money scope, but you get more than what you pay for I think. Mine isn't the Rimfire version, it's set up to handle any standard rounds (within reason) and I have it on my Mark II .22LR, and it's great. They're great rifles, too, btw.

Chris,
Which model Savage did you go with? I am undecided between the Mark II BV or the FSS. I am really thinking the BV as I just acquired a Leupold VXII 3-9 that is going on it. It is kinda overkill for a .22, but the price was right!

I put a Hawke Varmint II on my Mark II. Hawke doesn't sell that model anymore. It is a 6X20-44 scope with the adjustable objective lens. You're gonna need the AO on your rifle to correct the parrallax at different range settings. Nice thing about high magnifiction scopes is that you can see your target holes at 100 yards, even a small .22 hole.

If I was right-handed, I would buy the FVT since it comes with really nice peep sights and I am pretty sure it is drilled for a scope. Since I am left-handed, I went with the BVTLSS which is the laminated thumbhole stock, varmint (bull) barrel, left-handed and stainless steel. Savage does not have a lot of options for the left handed shooters.

Interesting, it seems that the Mueller does have adjustable AO (down to 10 yards) but it looks like the Nikon is fixed at 50mm.

I'd still go with the APV over that Nikon. No adjustable objective on the Nikon (although it's parallax is set for 50yds, not bad for 22lr), and I'm not a fan of that BDC reticle they have. I have that on a varmint rifle with a Nikon Monarch, and to my eye, the circles they added are too big. I will say that Nikon makes great glass, and that scope would not be a bad choice - just not my choice.

The tactical APV adds a 30mm tube and mildot reticle. If you don't want or need that reticle, the regular APV will be fine. I like the mildot better (which I bought), but that's definitely personal preference.

Looks like I am bitching here about Savage, but I am not, I am glad that they have ANY left handed target rifles.[smile]

Anyway, Still looks like the Mueller is in the lead, how about this Simmons from Midway?

+1 on that - lefty stuff is still not that common.

Not familiar with it, but the numbers look good. I would be concerned that at 20x, the less expensive glass wouldn't be all that bright, like most lower end scopes I've tried at that kind of magnification. My personal preference is for a lower low power than 6.5 on rimfire, 4x or less, but that's just my preference.

Alright, I ordered the Mueller APV Tactical today from opticsplanet.com which had a 5% off coupon. Can't wait to get it.
