I have a rail (Ultimak) mount in place of the front handguard on an m1 carbine. I am interested in trying a red dot sight (something that is very low to the rail, because the natural line of sight on the carbine is very close to the barrel).

Does anyone have any suggestions for a reasonably rugged and low profile red dot sight for this application?

Thanks

I used an EOTech on mine and it worked fine. Made it a little bit muzzle heavy but in a short range/HD type gun, I prefer it that way.

See if you can find an Aimpoint CS sight.

They are Swedish military overruns and were being sold by Midway a few months back (all out of stock now).

They have a built in picatinny mount (no need to purchase separate) and were the "lowest" red dot sight I could find when I was looking around.

I have one mounted on the top of my AR and it sits very low - I can use the Troy flip up irons by just sighting thru the Aimpoint.

The CS is pretty much as low as it can get from what I have seen.

Midway no longer has them in stock - do some searching and you might find one for sale. I just picked up another one from a guy who had one for sale on AR15.com

Aimpoint Micro T/H-1 in standard mount should get what you are looking for. Alot of people consider the Ultimak/Micro the best combination for AK platform as well. You can also consider Docter Optic, but I am not sure how well Dr would handle the heat.
