I am buying a P30 very soon but can't make up my mind on 9mm or .40. I have owned only one 9mm (Walther PPS) and think I prefer .40 for self defense. (My distaste for 9mm is probably unfounded) But this pistol will be for the range and possibly idpa. Is 9mm easy to find at the moment?
I can and will hand load 9mm if it is hard to get.
I currently have about 1000 rounds of .40 on hand.
What are your thoughts?

Modern defensive 9mm ammo is just as good or better ballistics-wise. Range ammo is cheaper too. Don't want to start the age old lame ass argument. Just my opinion and the reason I sold my fotay all together.

My intent is not a caliber war. I am looking at the pros and cons of choosing 9mm over .40 for this platform and intended use.

9mm. It'll be a lot more pleasant to shoot. (less muzzle flip). If you find you don't like the gun down the road, it'll have better resale value/mobility, too. Only a few want .40s- but if I have a 9mm (whatever) I can sell it in a day if I need to.

Go to any walmart and see what caliber is more available. Then realize you're limited with 10 rounds if you're in MA regardless. Then come buy one from me :)

I am actually buying three new handguns. Sig p238, S&W pro series 1911 with the 3 inch barrel and the P30ls. Do you have them all? I would be trading in several guns to fund the purchase.
M&P .45 full size
M&P Shield in .40
BG .380
Ruger LCR .38
Remington R1 1911

My lgs has given me prices on both the new and what they will give me for my trades. I think you shop is a good distance for me (live near Northampton) but would be willing to make the drive for a good deal.

Trading those would be such a waste man. Sell them!

I dont think there is any factory conversion barrel, but you might be able to find an aftermarket barrel conversion.

If the HK45 was mass compliant it would be my first choice.

There is no such thing as "MA Compliant" for handguns. Only the list that dealers need to follow. Find one private sale, and you're good to go. Also prepare to take out a mortgage if you do.

I know how the list works that is what I was referring too. I want to buy new because I am unloading several handguns to fund the purchase. It would take a while to sell all my pistols one at a time. Going to a dealer makes the whole process easier for me.

They are available. There are a couple for sale in the Dealer classified (1350 for standard and 1750 for OD/FDE framed versions). While the $1350 ain't cheap, you're going to pay close to a grand for the P30. So think about how much is it worth to get what you really want.

In .40 you are only down 3 rounds from the standard capacity of 13.
In 9mm you are down 5 rounds from the standard capacity of 15.
Since this is a new design there are no pre bans that I know of.
I'm a big fan of 9mm but personally I'd consider the .40 as it's closer to the standard, (not saying I'd go that route, just that I'd consider it, though).
Either choice would be a good one.
Then I'd have to decide on whether I want the P30 or the P30L.
So many decisions!
