Son Scott is in AK fishing with his brother Mark, who lives in Homer and runs a 24 ft boat on Kachemak bay. Got a call from Scott yesterday. He caught a 74 lb Halibut and friend Ron who went up with him took a 35 pounder. Lucky bastards. I've been up there fishing with Mark many times and have only gotten the little ones. Jack.

nice catch...there was a thread the other day we were talking about the guy in alaska who hauled in a 480 pounder in Alaska and it had to be shot before getting on the boat..

That's usually what they do with the bigger ones. Usually use a .410 shotgun so as not to damage the hook. Mark harpooned this 74 pounder but it still had to be clubbed to death in the boat. In Homer, at least, if you want to enter a big one in the derby, you can't have any holes in it. They have to get a noose around the tail and winch it out. That must get interesting with a fish close to 500 lbs. Jack.

Except in that case it would have been a new record Halibut, but it was denied because it was shot.

Halibut is my favorite fish. 74lbs sounds delicious. Where is the cookout?
