Anybody a current or past member of Hanson Rod and Gun Club? I'm looking around for a club to join again, now that my schedule allows more time to spend shooting on weekdays. I live in Plymouth. I was a member of Plymouth R&G for a couple of years and was relatively happy there. However I want to join a CMP-affiliated club and Plymouth is not one.

Hanson is about the closest affiliated club to me. Braintree and Holbrook are very tempting....they both look like decent clubs with great facilities. However, the 45 minute ride each way is a spoiler, because I'd hate to feel rushed while trying to enjoy shooting when I have to be back home to get the kids off the bus, or for some other chore.

I'd love to just join every club within a 50 mile radius of me, but obviously that would get pricey every year!

If your main reason to join a CMP affiliated club is to qualify for CMP purchases, GOAL is affiliated and will fill that requirement.
I'm a member at Plymouth and shoot on weekdays. There's hardly anyone ever there. I get bored talking to myself but I can change targets whenever I want.
Wait a minute, forget Plymouth, you won't like it[wink]

Hmm, I'd been meaning to re-join GOAL as well. So being a member will fufill the affiliation requirement, huh? Hmmmmm. Yes, buying rifles and ammo from CMP was really my main reason for wanting CMP affiliation, besides it just being a cool organization.

Is the new indoor range at Plymouth functional yet? It looks it in their pics, but the last text update was from last year.

I'm a member at Hanson and I love it. Nice ranges and not a lot of unneeded rules. PM me if you want to check it out sometime.

Yes, GOAL membership does it for the CMP.
There was talk about getting Plymouth affiliated with the CMP but that's as far as it went.
As far as I know, the new range is open. I have to get in there for a reorientation soon. I rarely use the indoor range anyway. I like it outside with no one around.

Same here JonJ. I used to go to the outdoor range, even in the middle of winter. I'd go inside the basement of the small clubhouse there to get out of the wind to load mags.

One Sunday myself and 2 other friends (both full members themselves) came out of the indoor range to find 3-4 older gentlemen sitting in the clubhouse with a football game on, all giving us the stink eye. One of them said something to the effect of, "Good, you guys are finally done." and another chimed in with, "You guys aren't going back in there, are you?" I guess our shooting (at a shooting range, of all places!) was disturbing their football game. If I had any more ammo left I would have gone back inside and shot it, rapidly. None of us were/are troublemakers though, so we packed our gear and left.

That and the looks I'd get sometimes while running through handgun and AR mags by other members who were just there to put a handful of rounds downrange to sight in their hunting rifles. I definitely liked it a LOT more on weekdays or later Saturday afternoons when nobody else was there.

I've been a member of Hanson for a long time, and love it. Not only does it offer alot of different events/programs for virtually all types of shooting sports, but is one of the last remaining "free" clubs out there...The only troublesome rule I know of is no .50 BMG, but that is only until the highpower range is rebuilt. Come down any sunday AM to join.

No it is not, all of the members are still being punished for not helping more. It is done and is really nice but you can't use it yet. I am heading down at noon to shoot with a couple of buddies that are members. Too lazy to get up and get 2 rounds of sporting clays in before pistol.

That's pretty messed up. They thought the members should have helped more (which may be the truth) so now that it's done, they won't open the doors??

I agree general members are capable of swinging a paintbrush or doing some cleaning, but that was some MAJOR construction there....what did they expect members to do more of? I would think due to liability concerns they would want most of the work done by contractors anyhow.

Hey, I know this is an old thread, but I'm thinking of joining Hanson Rod & Gun. I've been there a few times before as a guest of a former member, and back when John Davis was still doing the NRA course, I took my safety course from him there. Most everyone there seemed pretty nice, but the problem is I don't know anyone who is currently a member there and I was thinking of joining. Is there anyone who would be willing to sponsor me in the near future? Thanks!

Just walk into the clubhouse any Sunday morning (I think gates are open 8-noon) and talk to that days rep of the membership commitee. I am sure you'll find yourself a sponsor.

Found this thread deep in the archives about Hanson and dug it up. This past Saturday Hanson Rod and Gun hosted the Mass Wildlife "Becoming an Outdoor Woman" event. It was fabulous. They had to cap the number of attendees at 40, but all of the women loved it. They shot 22lr rifles, handguns, shotguns on the trap range and bow and arrow. I'm hoping to find Evelyn's email address so I can send her pictures of the event. The club members really turned out to make this a successful day. I was there helping on the trap range and all of the women I spoke with were just thrilled. It was great to see an event like this somewhere East of Springfield.
