I have a friend that says he has a rifle and he sent me pictures. It is an M14A1 by the looks of it. He says it has a made in Chine tag on it. I hope to get it from him tomorrow. Anyone hear of such a beast?

China made several thousand M14s for distribution to communist guerillas etc (trying to implicate the US) back in the 70s. Those were selective-fire. Then, thousands were imported in the 80s and early 90s by Norinco and Polytech Industries as civilian sporter rifles. The receivers are machined and well made, not all parts will match with USGI guns (although they can be made to do so by a good gunsmith), and you'll want to check the headspace, but they're generally great shooters.

Poly's are still in production I believe. Three years ago up in Canada I saw an ad for them. The shop had them at $400.00. Unfortunately I couldn't bring one back.

I read an article a while back about these rifles.
Good strong receivers, but the bolts can be soft, leading to head space problems.
I do believe Fulton Armory and others can fit them for USGI parts, as noted above.

I had a Polytech M14. It was a real nice rifle. I changed the stock to a USGI walnut and added a H&R trigger group to it. I checked the headspace and it was fine. There's a NES member who has a set of gauges that made their way around the country. He loaned them out and they went from person to person. I'm sure if he's still doing it, he'll chime in if you need them[wink]
I ended up getting rid of the Poly. The only reason I did sell it was because I got a real good deal on a Springfield Loaded. Otherwise, I'd still have it.

I've had a Norinco for quite a few years now (I paid $400 I think). I sent it out to Ron Smith; he tweaked it a little bit and it's been a nice shooter. Not an MOA rifle, but good for sand pit use.

Well, here it is. I just got it today. It didn't come with any mags, but I will have to get some. It says it is a M-14S in .308, Made in China, IEE USA SFLD MICH, Polytech China. It is mint and looks like it has never been fired!

Man, I shot finally shot this M14 at the Seabrook Public Range on Saturday and it was awesome! It shot great! My first shot was from about 75 yards at a watermelon...that fruit exploded about 40-50 feet in the air! It was sweet! If you know anyone that lives in Seabrook, that range is GREAT. I even met some great people there!
