Has anyone in a red town tried this:

Folks would be surprised, but the squeaky wheel does get the grease.

I remember many years ago being told that one had to be a "townie" to make a difference/get anything changed in my newly adopted town. That was BULL . . . within a year I got active in a local Jaycee chapter, my Wife got involved with the League of Women Vultures (I know, but we've cured her since then) and we started to make a difference in the town. I get the same respect from gov't officials as genuine "townies" get.

Making noise might make a difference for everyone or it might only make a difference for those that make the noise. Either way, it's definitely worth a shot.

it wont get you to far to go and fight. look at the retired weymouth firefighter that was denied an all lawful purposes and took it to court. he lost and is now going to appeal it in supreme court. there is no reason he shouldnt have been granted his request but weymouth sucks!!!! and the pd's dont care cause there only using our money to fight against us.

In the Erin Brockovich movie one of the attorneys stated that "if it gets to court, both sides lose"!

"Fighting" in court is not a winning strategy for many reasons.

There are a lot of things that people can do w/o "fighting" in a public or legal arena. There is a good reason why most court cases end in a settlement/plea bargain in a hallway. Those that understand this can oftentimes use it to their advantage.

I do a lot of "one-on-one" discussions with gov't folks, plant the idea in their minds and let them later claim that the change in their policy was "their idea". Doesn't bother me one bit not to get credit for the changes . . . the only thing that's important is to have the change occur. I think that they call it "lobbying"! [laugh]

I'm considering talking to my local councilmen about promoting a motion to instruct the local PD to issue an ALP license to all applicants who are not unsuitable. Do you think this would be a good/bad idea? Do you think it would work?

I highlighted the area that worries me. What happens when you succeed in getting this passed by the council, and the COP declares almost every applicant unsuitable?
I'm not suggesting that you not fight the good fight, just that you think through every possible outcome. Herein lies the problem with "discretionary" licensing.

The Watertown Chief Ed Deveau has been sued in court over extralegal requirements he has imposed on citizens. He believes his motives justify his actions. I don't know how the court case turned out, but here's a head start:

It breaks my heart to know that civil servants are allowed to get away with this. It is possible because in reality we are a big government socialist state with entrenched politicians sucking up to liberal newspapers and a welfare loving bleeding heart constituency.

Rather than speak to the councilmen who have probably heard it all before, I think you should run for city council, or run for an office that has some influence in the way municipal policy is conducted in your city. If you do decide to run, I'm sure there are people here that would be willing to help your campaign, I know I would.

I think your chief is a flagrant violator of civil rights and should be subject to criminal penalties.

wayne, i don't live in watertown(thankfully) though as you know, i have a few friends who do.

It has always amazed me the amount of power the police have. Cops (chiefs) should in no way be allowed to interpret the 2nd (or 3rd, 4th, etc) amendment. If you read my posts, you know that I fear the police. This is just another example. Maybe the best example. Way too much F-ing power.
