I have a semi-auto Romanian AK that has been having a firing problem every 20 rounds. Could someone tell me which part is most likely malfunctioning and what I should look for?

+1 on the firing pin - a good soaking in solvent and follow up with compressed air will make short work of any cosmoline clogging. You may also want to consider disassembling the bolt and making sure everything is clean and there aren't any burrs that may be causing it to hang up: http://www.ak-47.net/ak47/comp/bolt.html

I don't know if there is any 7.62x39 ammo out there that would have a "soft primer". Odds are it's the FP and not the ammo.

Another thing you should look for is anyone else at the range when you fire the thing, especially until you get it fixed 100%. Word has it not too long ago a guy was brought before The Man and got hit pretty hard on full-auto charges when his AR-15 slamfired: http://www.odcmp.org/new_forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=50986

American Eagle 7.62x39 has soft primers that slam fires in my SKS rifles and they have pins that rattle and move free.
Myself I'd avoid any commercial hunting ammo in an AK or SKS. Its not made to military specs like Wolf, Golden Tiger, Barnaul, or the other foreign types are.

Is there any kind of firing pin spring kit for the AK similar to the Murray's kits for the SKS?

No after market parts kits that I know of but I think some military models came with spring loaded pins.
I know some of the early Russian 1949/50 SKS rifles had factory spring loaded firing pins. No idea why they changed.[thinking]

It works again!

I melted off the loctite, increased the weight of the trigger pull on my Red star arms trigger to 7.5 lbs and now it works fine [smile]
