I have a friend who is in the market for his first AR-15.
He has shot a couple and decided that he wants one.
So, What is the best AR-15 for the least amount of money?

He has been looking at Stag, Rock River, S&W.
He has given some serious thought to the Stag Arms, gas piston model.
He'd to find some long tern reviews on new AR-15 rifle.

Thanks,
smitty

you can buy a kit and build one yourself for under $600 if you really want to save money. this way you can be a cool kid with a forward assist and dust cover...

lower receiver for $50
transfer fee $10-40
complete build kit $500

shipping $10-20

ETA - "best" is all relative as well. what do you want to do with it.
- do just want something to shoot?
- are you going to beat the hell out of it?
- how accurate do you want it?

That is like asking what is the best car for the best price........ insert opinion here. and remember opinions are like a-holes ...everybody has one.

if you can do without a forward assist and dust cover the s&w m+p sport is 600 or lots of good ar's available for 850-900. Heck save u 1200-1300 and get a preban model AR. but then comes the next question.................

What's the best Optic for the best price???????????????????????????????????? and on and on and on..................... with accessories, mags, ammo etc.

intended use is key

range plinker almost any major name brand entry level will do.

I have a stag M2 carbine. Flawless to date 4K plus. I Feed it a steady diet of steel case cheap fodder.
For more better but still under 1k RRA national match if you intend to do entry level Service rifle
For what they cost the S&W sport is a great gun and when your bored with it by then you will know what other uppers you want.

you can build for less if your building something out of the ordinary.

My AR experiences are M16A2 and A4, M4 and M4A1 and my Stag Model 8. So really only my Model 8 is where cost and options came to be a concern.

It is a very nice rifle and affordable to start with. But if you know your components, build it yourself.

And the gas piston is nice.

This is a great post. I actually had the same question and found this. I guess I'd need to do some reading and find out How hard it is to build one together. I dont plan on shooting competition....mainly use it for a little fun. I plan on doing more pistol Copetitions if anything.

i don't think these smith and wesson AR'S get enough credit....everyone talks about the M&P sport since it has a small price tag (~$600-$700), but not many people mention the higher end models that Smith and Wesson offers. i recently purchased the M&P15FT after a couple months of researching and shopping. couldn't justify any other complete rifle at a similar price, and it comes ready for optics, mid-length quadrail, flip up magpul battle sights, 1:8 twist w/ 5R rifling bull barrel, fixed stock (adjustable look). nothing but great reviews on these S&W's, competitive pricing, and usually readily available through any dealer, i paid $1105 out the door for this one. here's a pic, my EOTech XPS2-0 just delivered today and i can't wait to mount it up when i get home from work!!! i added the LED flash light and red dot laser shown on the forend:
