put the hammer down to minimize tension, and expect some tension and it may "spring" out. If I ever think there may be some tension, I put a small towel over it, keeps it from flying across the room.
That's what I was thinking, but the spring is under a fair amount of tension, even with the screw loose and the hammer pin removed. The spring doesn't slide sideways easily, I couldn't get it to move with my (timid) tapping. Maybe I need to hit it harder.
I'm a little concerned about getting it back in, because of the tension required.
