I can't believe i'm saying "It's easy and fast" considering how NJ is so liberal and hostile to firearms. FID makes it legal to possess, and shoot at a range or your own property, NO CCW, valid for 10 years. Took 20 days from application to received, all electronic, nothing mailed in, no trips to NJ for training.

Website works really well, and emails you at every stage of approval, such as fingerprints received, and when each of your character references have responded.

In the end NJ doesn't send you a plastic card. You are emailed a PDF that you are supposed to print out and/or keep on your phone.

1) Nov 7 Applied for an out-of-state FID online Link Here --> State Police
2) Nov 11 Local UPS store (IdentiGo location) to get fingerprinted electronically, $100.
3) Nov 13 Received an email with a mental health release doc to fill out and email back
4) Received 2 emails as my 2 character references completed online survey about me
4) Nov 27 License approved, PDF emailed to me, 20 days total.

How many years is the FID effective for?
It's valid for 10 years.
Is it even remotely possible for non-resident CCW?
Yes, but you must go to NJ for a training course with live fire, and most places require you to already have an FID before they'll let you do the training. I haven't done this (yet). You may also have to go to NJ for an interview or appearance before a judge.

I never bothered, since most CCW's / LTC's were denied from what I heard, and MA asks "Have you ever been denied a license elsewhere?"
