This question goes out to any members of the Hopkington Sportsmans Association. I recently became and member and have a few questions about the target frames. The plans on the HSA website are a bit confusing. Do I need to make two different sized frames? One for rifle and one for pistol? I'm also a bit confused about the different leg sizes. Do the legs need to be 1.5" square on the bottom for both rifle and pistol?

You do not need to build 2 frames. As long as your point of impact is on the bottom half of the backstop, you are okay. If you plan on shooting on the outdoor range, the frame must be high enough that your rounds are impacting the bottom half of the backstop, even if your target is at the 25 yard line, hence the note about an extra piece of wood. Welcome to HSA!

Thanks for the reply. I plan on shooting the outdoor range for now. That answers my question about the frames. Now for the legs?

The leg dimensions at the bottom are important if you want to use the cement block to hold your frame. I use a "H" shaped wood base to hold two pieces of strapping which are stapled directly to cardboard - very easy to replace the strapping when it gets chewed up. As mentioned in an earlier post, the club's concern is the impact location of the rounds, not the particular target frame design you use.

I totaly understand the importance of the impact location of the rounds. I just don't want to drive 35 minutes up there only to find out that my target frames won't fit in the holders. My main concern right now is the lower leg dimensions. Sorry for being so OCD about the dimension of the lower legs. Thanks again for the input.

I recently made my first one also. I made mine 1.5 inches wide, but you should make them double thick or you'll end up having to wedge something in behind the frame.

On a side note, anyone at HSA find a motorcycle key there recently?

Here is what I came up with. All glued and stapled. I hope it fits in the holders. If not I will have some extra tools with me to fine tune it.

Took my frame to the range over the weekend. It fit perfect. The dimensions for the ?'s in the previous pics are 5" for the front view, and 1-1/2" for the side view.

Hillman - Sorry I didn't see this sooner - No one has turned in a motocycle key - if they do - I know who to contact.

Tattoo72 - Nice Job! Hope some of the other members get a chance to see your frame as an example - some of the frames are little shakey...
Enjoy

Hillman sorry to hear you haven't found that key yet. Seems like keys always fall into a black hole never to be seen again.

Bob thank you for the compliment on the target frame. I had actually seen a frame there one day that was held together with string. lol. I might build a few extras incase someone needs one. All I'll ask is just to have the cost of supplies payed for. Or possibly trade for some ammo. [smile]
