Issue: I have an In-Line muzzleloader that was not well-cared-for. It was lent to me by a co-worker because he did not know what was wrong with it and wanted my "expertise" on how to fix it. Upon inspecting it, I determined it is completely non-functional due to the fact it appears it was not cleaned at all after it was fired for the first time and was left that way for many months (years?), so the bore and ignition system is completely corroded. I no longer have contact with the individual who lent it me as we've both moved on to other jobs.

Though I know federal law does not consider a muzzleloader to be an actual firearm I am nonetheless apprehensive about disposing of it by simply throwing it in the trash, especially since I live in the PRM. Can anyone recommend a viable alternative? It is beginning to annoy me as it is taking up valuable space in my safe.

Thank you for any advice you can give.

I'd bring it to a gun buyback and get $50 for it.
No do not do this. Post a pic karma it or sell it here. It may not be as bad as you think. Plus guys like me love this stuff. I been practicing my refinishing skills.

Hey you mind if I try to clean it using an electrolysis tank? You can have it back when I'm done.

I've done this before w/ several rifles which looked long gone, but did a very good job cleaning them up.

Probably got your picture in a newspaper. Poster child for the antis. Hope you wore your Boston Strong t-shirt. [sad2]

Actually if was funny to watch the anti/fudd sheriff's face go from a huge grin to utter despair as he realized that the first 5 guys in line had rusted out muzzleloaders. He started muttering, "This isn't what this is supposed to be for...." I cut him off saying, "Your ad said functional. Where's my $100?"

F$/@ the antis. I will invalidate your buy backs and get the good guns out of the line. Any money I "make" from turning in junk guns will go towards buying more guns.

Freedom just called. It wants to know why you hate it.

You're not invalidating shit Pal; you are validating it.

The purpose of gun 'buy backs" is not to get guns off the streets. You know this. I know this, and the people that run them know this.

It's to gain publicity, and to create the perception in the public that there is a 'gun problem'.

I've posted this before, but which of the stories below will play better for the antis?

Gun Buyback Nets Huge Cache of Weapons

January 6, 2014

ANYTOWN - Police chief Joe Donut was speechless as he sat amid an arsenal of weapons removed from the streets at the gun buyback held yesterday at the DPW headquarters. "I never expected this" said the bewildered Chief as he stared at the pile of automatic assault weapons designed to be loaded with dangerous black powder, air rifles simple enough for a child to operate, and shotguns capable of firing hundreds of bullets at once.

Local residents joined with community leaders in a cry for stricter gun laws. "We need to do something right now", exclaimed local resident Sally Minivan, "I just want to cry when I think of how many children's' lives we saved today".

Gun rights advocate John Rosenthal remarked, "This is typical of the gun problem that exists even in a quiet community like Anytown", adding, "common sense regulations are needed to protect the people of our state".

Anytown representatives are expected to meet with the Governor in the coming weeks to discuss widespread reform of the existing laws to keep guns like these off the streets.

Based on the success of this gun buyback, the Anytown Police and local churches plan to make this a recurring event, held monthly at various areas around the town. Supermarket rivals Whole Foods and Wegmans have joined Stop and Shop and Demoulas in pledging financial support for future events.

Local Gun Buy Back Falls Short of Goal

January 6, 2014

ANYTOWN - Police chief Joe Donut and representatives from local churches were at a loss to explain the lack of participation at the gun buyback held at the DPW facility. The event, held yesterday from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM, was organized by the Calvary Church, Park Avenue Congregational Church United Church of Christ, Trinity Baptist Church and First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Anytown in an effort to keep guns from getting into the wrong hands.

The group had hoped to swap unwanted firearms for gift cards redeemable for groceries at local supermarkets.

“We stayed the whole day and nobody showed up,” said Mike Rich, a co-deacon for the mission and justice ministry at the Park Avenue Congregational Church., "A few of us even stayed around until 5:00 hoping that the warmer weather was keeping people away until later on."

"We need to re-evaluate where we use our limited resources", replied Chief Donut, when asked if the police will participate in the next attempt at a gun buyback, tentatively scheduled for February 23rd. "Maybe they should use the gift cards to buy supplies for the veteran's shelter instead."

Jim Wallace, Executive Director of the Gun Owners' Action League remarked, "The failure of events such as this shows that the 'gun problem' is really a crime problem. Criminals are not going to turn in their guns for a bag of groceries."

Anti-gun activist John Rosenthal was unavailable for comment.

It doesn't matter what you turn in, or what it costs them. It's not their money, so they don't care who gets it or what you're going to spend it on. They can make whatever you turn in -no matter how unusable - sound like it was something that was about to kill a semi-truck loaded with babies.

If you participate, you're playing into their hands.

If you're not going to do something cool with it, like overload it and touch it off with a string behind a barrier, give it to someone here. People are always looking for projects.

The rules are a little different here Eddie. The buys down here are paid for by the county. Our tax dollars. Additionally, since no license is needed to posses the game down here is buy the good stuff out of the line and flood the buy with rusted crap.

I think it would make a great base for a mail box. Either use it as a post with the barrel pointed up or mount it on a tripod with the mailbox on the very end of the barrel and make the mailbox look like a cool and super threatening silencer.

Don't forget to paint the word BANG on the little flag.

Buying stuff from people in line is fine, but every gun that gets turned in is a victory for the other side. These things are purely political events.

got going on it right away

Tossed in the electrolysis tank the night we met. 3 hours later this is what came out

pretty nasty but not wasted, doubt it will shoot accurate. Rifling was pretty well rotted. I got the breach plug out tonight. Not easy and not pretty. It just might shoot again? I would most likely shoot 50 grains max and a light bullet....
I got it apart, needs a good cleaning, fix the sights and maybe mount a cheap scope ? I was thinking of the 209 conversion kit but dont think its worth the money ? Its a 1997 CVA STAG I dont think this gun was 100$ new back then ?
I got the heavy dirty stuff done. I will post with any progress.

thank you again........just the kind of stuff I like to tinker with.

notice scope mount threads stripped, good practice there. I really didnt want it in hopes to shoot it. just practice my repair skills.

Cut it down and make a noise maker/starter cannon. Put some wheels on it, make it fancy. Shoot it charged with powder and tissue paper wadding.

I apparently didn't properly clean mine, put it away corroding, moved with it, kept it in the closet for a year, then went overseas for a year, then came back and scrubbed it out for about half an hour. Nice shiny bore now. Who knows?

I was thinking something like that. I was thinking cannon with a red dot! I also was thinking complete tactifool. Colapasable stock forward grip pistol grip.
Its bound to be a paper tosser. The more I look at the corrosion in the the chamber area and around the breach plug the more I say...man that looks deep.

A little rust on the bore is not bad. Its when the corrosion and pitting get deep into the steel you need to be cautious. Best way to clean a axmodern BP. warm water and dish soap. The soap will actually break the surface tension and penatrate the fouling nice along with removing the salts. I plan on useing blackhorn powder which is non corrosive.
