I just loaded some 420 grain cast bullets with IMR4227 for the .45/70 Sharps. I've been using 5744 but the high wall and the rolling block like 4227 better so I thought I'd try it in the other calibers I shoot with cast bullets. If the day goes well tomorrow, I should have time to shoot them after work.

I also loaded some 4227 with a cast bullet for the .30/40 Krag carbine. I shot them today. The 4227 loads did better in the Sharps and about the same in the .30/40.

My experience with 4227 was it both accurate as all get out and also dirty as hell.

I also believe it was one of four powders recommended for savage smokeless muzzle loader but was dropped due to frequent failure to ignite at low temps. As this was using 209 shotgun primers this may not be relevant to your use .

After more shooting, I've come to the conclusion that IMR4227 is not a good choice for the .45/70. I had several rounds where the primer went off but the powder didn't ignite and I had to push the stuck bullet out of the barrel. I thought it was bad primers but found that if I tipped the rifle up before I fired it, the rounds went off fine. I guess the charge with 4227 is so small that it lays in the bottom of the case and doesn't reliably ignite. IMR4227 works great in the .38/55 and the 7mm mauser but I'll stick with 5744 in the big .45/70 case.
