So I'm on the verge of picking up the magpul Ambi sling mount, and like any mount, it seems that I have to remove the castle nut to put it in.... How hard is this? Is this something I can potentially screw up and totally f-up my AR? I'm slowly amassing a pile of Ambi parts that I'm. Going to need to put in, should I just wait and bring it to a gunsmith?

Not really hard to do, if you have the right tools. You will of course need a castle nut wrench, and some way to mount the receiver in a vise without scratching/damaging it.

Depending on who made your rifle, the castle nut may be staked in place, or some makers use locktite. If staked, the castle nut will usually come off with enough force. If Locktited in, some suggest heating the castle nut a little to loosen the Locktite.

Hope this helps.

Heat gun works on loc-tite.

As you are removing the castle nut, be careful not to loose the takedown detent spring/pin that is held by the end plate. You should also stake the ASAP plate after you assemble it. Staking is important, as it prevents the castle nut from unscrewing and making your rifle inoperable.
Personally, instead of ASAP, consider the Noveske end plate. It functions similarly to ASAP, but is easier to stake, and cheaper to boot. I have one of these installed on most of my rifles.
