I have a friend with a Ruger 22/45 that doesn't shoot, has no trigger (the trigger is there and moves but it doesn't do anything when pulled. Like it's not releasing anything) and we can't take apart. We can't get the mainspring out. When we release the catch it won't swing free. I also have one that is fine and we were using it as reference. In looking at mine it looked like the hammer wasn't in the correct position when he assembled it. After looking at it more it seemed like the pin that hangs from the hammer might be caught above the mainspring. So we are basically lost since it doesn't swing free. I tried to hammer the bolt pin to see if it would come down and hopefully free up whatever is caught on the mainspring but got nothing. He is calling Ruger to see about sending it in but I was hoping to get some info and saving him a few bucks. Thanks. Also, are there any local smiths in the worcester area that might be able to fix it?

Something similar happened to me once. I ended up taking out all the pins, and shaking the fire control components loose until I could get the mainspring out, then the bolt, then took the receiver off the frame, and put it back together piece by piece.

Santurri in North Attleboro...

Do NOT keep trying to cycle the bolt....

try this,
- with empty mag in pull the trigger and shake with muzzle down - you are trying to get the hammer forward so that you can get the rear pin out....

yep gun was assembled wrong, needs to be taken apart and put together properly. Learned that the hard way with mine, first time I stripped it for cleaning.

He dropped it off and I did what you guys said. I kept hitting the grip frame with my hand while the gun was upside down and it finally allowed the mainspring housing to release. Had it apart and put it back together. Seems to be working well now but won't know for sure until we take it to the range on Sunday.

Thanks for the help.
