Its A Browning BLR 81 in 308

OK so I got the rifle today it is not a 30-30 its a browning blr 81 in 308cal. This thing is beautiful and looks damn near new. What do you guys think about a 308 for hunting deer? I cant wait to try it out!

The BLR 81' is a SWEET rifle. Cycle the action and you'll see right away that it's smoother than any Winchester 94. Also, the detachable box magazine makes it much more user friendly for a hunter, especially when unloading, compared to a tube fed rifle. Nice score.

That is a pretty rifle! The only drawback to the lever action is if you are taking a prone shot and you need to re-load. It's an awkward action from that position but that's about the only problem I can think of. I've taken many deer with a .308 and I have to say, if the bullet is of good construction, the lighter ones (150 gr.) work as well or better than the heavies (180 gr). Either way you can't lose but as everyone says bullet placement is everything.

Box fed mag is a big plus! Tube fed limits you to rund-nosed bullets.

.308 is a much better choice than a 30-30.
Nice rifle to.
.308 will do just fine on deer and many animals that are much larger.
I used a .308 in Africa and killed zebra, waterbuck, wildebeest etc., that are a lot bigger and tougher than any deer here in the USA.
Good choice and as already mentioned the box mag. gets a big thumbs up..

It's a fine looking rifle and a great cal.. Took two deer with a .308 this year, Rem600, and both dropped when hit. Mine is a bolt action and given a choice, yours is much faster. Brownings just look so classy. Good luck. Jim...........

I have the EXACT same rifle and love it. I have taken numerous deer with it the nice thing about the BLR is the action; it is similar to a bolt action. Look at the face of the bolt, it rotates and locks in to the breech giving a positive lock up like a bolt action rifle. The previous post is correct this rifle is smooooooth

I've deer hunted plenty and agree with the others who have said that the 308 is a fine caliber for deer and bigger game. What's your beef with that?
