Hey All,

I went to the range the other day and shot my CM9 with some cheap ammo. It's obvious when I fire it there is a huge plume of smoke. I just figured it was the cheap ammo reloads I bought. Just out of curiosity I loaded my buddy's 9mm ammo (standard remington non-reloads) and fired that. To my surprise there was still a huge plume of smoke after firing each round.

Anyone else with a CM9 or PM9 see the same huge puff of smoke?

To me, as long as it fires I don't care how much smoke is hovering around. I was just curious.

Thanks,
BW

Are you shooting indoors? Smoke is way more noticeable when the air isn't moving much. If you didn't clean the gun out there might be some crappy lube on it that is burning off, which also will cause smoke.

I would bet my money on the factory lube and oil and rust prevention chemicals burning off. As stated, it will be even worse indoors.

Get it home, clean it up real good and give it a go.

I've owned an MK9 and PM9 for years. They are no more smokey than any other 9mm handgun that I own.

Sounds like everyone is saying it's the oils burning off. I did clean it before I shot it at the range. I use all Hoppes products for cleaner and lubricant. And yes I was in a indoor range. But when I shot my buddy's 9mm there wasn't any noticeable plume of smoke. That's why it doesn't make sense to me. What do you people think?

As for the ammo it's UltraMaxx reloads (brass casings).

Your CM9 has a short bbl so there is a ton of unburnt powder behind the bullet. Also, the ultramax ammo is ultra crappy, and the Rem isn't much better. You might want to get some Speer short barrel for carry to reduce muzzle flash and recoil. Practice with these and make sure your gun eats them!

Yeah i know the ultramax is crappy but I wanted cheap brass to fire for the break in period. So you're saying the plume of smoke is due to the short barrel? And with that the unburnt powder is what I'm seeing? Interesting.

For carrying I have Hornady Critical Defense ammo.

Yeah, that doesn't really make sense does it ???
Powder only makes smoke when it burns.
If it's unburned, it's landing on the floor in front of the firing line.

So i bought non crap loads for once since I'm at around 250 rounds, and no crap smoke happening. I used Federal jacketed loads and no problem. Out of S&G's I bought more of the crap UltraMaxx Ammo and HUGE PLUME of smoke. So it's definitely due to that brand. FYI, it's not jacketed.

Thanks for everyone's help. Hope someone else besides me got some use out of this post.

That explains it all. Unjacketed lead has lube on it.... and that lube is going to burn off when you are shooting the gun. The lube also tends to smoulder a little. Think of it as burning wax almost. Anything having to do with unjacketed lead is gonna be smoky.

Good to know! That damn cheap ammo. At the outdoor range it's not too bad. The indoor range however...well it just annoys people next to you haha.
