I may be looking into buying a pistol that comes with a .357 conversion barrel.

To help with funding the purchase, I plan on selling the extra barrel.

What laws do I have to follow to sell the barrel in MA, what about out of state?

Thanks

IANAL, but the barrel is just a piece of metal and can be transferred as you see fit with no regulations or registration. Its the frame that counts as the firearm.

IANAL - 'firearms' as defined by law is the serialized frame or receiver. You don't need anything to sell or transport gun parts, like a barrel.

There aren't any. Barrels are uncontrolled parts in the US.

Clarification: Only pursuant to Federal law, not State law.

To further clarify, I hope:

State law has no restrictions on any gun part, including the barrel and frame, except when it comes to the assault weapons ban, e.g. high-capacity magazines. You don't need FID/LTC for any non-AWB parts in MA, except when you get enough to make a whole gun. (Yes, this is debatable)

Federal law only restricts the frame. All the other parts are okay, since the federal AWB expired in 2004. However, state law must also be satisfied for frame transfers, but this obviously doesn't apply in MA.

Note - I believe that pending legislation (H.4102, H.2259) would change this.
