I believe 357 magnum is my favorite round and have recently started reloading it. Aside from a 12 gauge shotgun, i have no other long guns. ARs sort of interest me but i am old fashion and have started looking into lever action 357s. Marlin has a fairly cheap model at around $600. Any advice on what to look for or stay away from? I want a solid target gun that will be a good companion to my S&W686 if the SHTF some day. Thanks

I have an Uberti 1873 chambered in 357mag. Love the gun. A tad more than $600 but I'd buy it again in a heart beat.

I have a Marlin 1894 in 357 and it's great. I also have an H&R single shot trapper in 357 and it goes to the range more than the lever gun. It's wicked accurate, fun and real easy to clean. If you can find one, buy it. Ruger makes a SS bolt action in 357 that I would love to own someday too.

I love lever guns as well as .357's. I have a few Marlin 1894's (SS and blue) and I love them. The .357 is a nice round out of a 18" bbl lever. Inside of 100yrds, with some loads, you're approaching 30-30 / .223 energies. I've gotten a few sub 2.5" groups at that range too.

I can't recommend them enough.

I have a marlin 1894c in 357. It has always been my favorite gun to shoot.

Quality in late model marlins is hit or miss, hopefully they will get their production straightened out. I would cruise the forums and auction sights looking for a used one.

I had the 1894c in 357, a late model, and the quality was, in my opinion, a miss.
The main screw on the side tended to come loose, the loading gate was way too stiff, and overall I was just not impressed with the quality. It was a ton of fun to shoot though. If I were to do it again I'd look for a broken in older model, or maybe the Uberti.

Thanks for the feedback. If my budget was $1,200 and wanted something that would be quality (could give the kids in 30 years) Or am i wasting money spending that much?

I have a Marlin 1894 Cowboy Ltd w/ 24 octagon barrel in .357 and just love it.
It's very accurate using 180 grs lead before 11.5 grs of VV N110.
I had to get it "smoothened", though (hammer got polished on the top to keep
the bolt from scratching over it).

I'm a big fan of lever guns and I have a late 80's production Marlin 1894C in .357.
Great gun, shoots great with both .357's and .38's.
I saw a new one on the shelf at Undercover Arms last week, IIRC the price was about $659 (?)
The wood was very nice on that particular specimen, nicer than the one I own.

I've never fired a Henry Big Boy, but I own one of their .22 lever rifles, and I've fired some of their other models as well.
The quality is excellent and the action is buttery smooth.

I also have a Browning B-92 in .357, which is another excellent rifle, but they don't make them anymore.
If you find one, they're not cheap and they DO NOT cycle reliably with .38's like the others.

Another good option is the Rossi R-92.
The quality of their new production lever guns is light years ahead of the older Puma models, and they're available in stainless and a wide range of calibers, barrel lengths and configuratons.
I have a 16" stainless model in .44 Mag, and I'd ike to get another in .45LC.

Henry is making "Mares Leg" models now.
You can even get one in .22LR
My Henry itch is for a Frontier.

It's been over two months and I haven't bought one. Henry's are hard to find. Northshore firearms told me it took them 6 months to get a 357 Henry in stock. Called FS and they had nothing but said they would try an order me one. Undercover arms checked inventory at his dealer and they had zero in stock....they still have the Marlin but the action, finish and sights didn't do anything for me. I almost made an impulse purchase and bought the Henry Golden Boy 22....what a really cool rifle....but I reminded myself to stay focused...then again, I might go back on my way home and buy it :) If anybody gets a lead on a Henry Big Boy in 357, would greatly appreciate a heads-up via PM. Thanks

I keep getting an itch for a 357 Ranch Hand. Not sure why. I hope it passes soon.
Don't do it. Ask Atilla about HIS range hand if you want help resisting that urge... or you can ask PSS, luv2bfree, drgrant or myself about it, as we all watched the antics he went through with that POS up at the NLRG pin shoots.

I have a Henry 22,it is a fun little gun to shoot but I have a friend who had to send his back twice for repair.

PSS owns it now and loves it.

i hated it. cool as hell but when it goes back to taurus three times and jams up like a MFer... i'm done playing with it.

Last time I was at Riley's (first week of July?) they had a 357 and a 44 mag Marlin on the shelf. I don't remember the prices, who knows if they are still there. Give them a call

I didn't know PSS was a masochist.

he says it works fine. to be fair it would work better with magtech ,357. brazilian conspiracy? i got his model 19 so whatever.

don't say these things. i want a .357 lever gun... bad!

i wouldn't allow rifles, the pins fly apart as is, you start getting just a little more energy from a round from a rifle and you might kill all my pins. ranch hand was pistol-length for the most part... but if two guys showed up with a .357 ranch hand and a .44 one... it's ON.
