Long term food

I at one point got dehydrated premade stuff but decided to go more with ingredients that cook easily and quickly, such as rice and lentils and some spices and dehydrated vegetables. You can get dehydrated kidney beans and lentils that cook very quickly,
but even regular dried lentils can be boiled in not very much time. Then you can control the salt content, taste and texture and get almost complete protein, and its just as easy to make as the fully prepared ones, and cheaper.

Just curious if there is a preference out there that balances taste/nutrition when it comes to the long term pre packaged meals.
We’ve stayed away from the 4Patriots and the like. Mountain House is one of the only ones with real meat. We balance that with some Auguson Farms for fruits and vegetables as well as dairy items. These are just the long term, freeze dried foods that we have bought. The Mountain House meals are good but expensive and a little bit salty, as are most Freeze dried foods.

I recommend you buy a variety of single meals from Midway or Amazon before buying any #10 cans. In my family, we occasionally each pick one out of a large tote of single meals, follow the directions, and give them a try. It’s a fun way to get my wife and kids involved and it keeps them from dreading having to eat them.
