I am new to shooting in general (will be going for my RI 'Blue Card' soonish) and am looking at .22's for target shooting at a local range. I have had 2 recommended to me, the S&W 22A and the Sig Mosquito. I am leaning towards the S&W, as I am a bigger guy with big hands. I am curious if anyone had any other recommendations of guns to look at in about this price range.

Thanks
Scott

the 22a is a great gun. the Mosquito sucks and quite frankly, I wouldn't waste my money on one.

Skip the mosquito. Consider the Ruger MKIII (or better yet, a used MKII) or Browning Buckmark. S&W .22 revolvers are good as well.

I had looked at the Ruger as well, but a friend owns one and mentioned disassembly is kind of a bear, I am still feeling the S&W may be my best bet. Thanks all for the input!

If you join as a paying member, there is a S&W Model 18-3 revolver for sale on the NES Member's classified for a fair price. I have an 18-4 and all I can say is, 'What a gun."

I've had my Ruger for years. I have yet to take it apart.

I have never had a problem with my mosquito. I also have walther p22, and my favorite a gsg 1911 22 Cal. I enjoy them all and have shoot multitudes or rounds thru them without problems

that's not true at all, the dissassembly is pretty easy....it's the REASSEMBLY that causes fits. I got my MkII as a xmas present when I was 11 and even though it gave me some trouble I always got it back together. When I got back into shooting this year after 10yrs or so off I dusted it off and took it to the range. Remembering the issues I had back in the day I did a innerweb search and found a good site that laid out step by step with photos what the gotchas are when putting it back together and had everything buttoned up on the second try. I love that gun, it'll be in the collection for a looong time.

I also don't like guns that are difficult to disassemble/reassemble. So I'm content with my S&W 22a. I also put a red dot scope on it for extra fun [grin]

The main thing to remember with reassembly of the MKIII is to reinsert the mag and pull the trigger to release hammer which allows insertion of the backstrap/mainspring housing. This extra step is due to the magazine safety. The MKII's dont have a mag safety so you dont have to keep inserting and removing the mag at each step of dissassembly to move the hammer into the right position. Once you get used to "using the mag" during reassembly the MKIII is almost as easy as the MKII to strip and reassemble.
+1 for the Ruger, my MKII-22/45 has 20,000+ rounds on it and with a recoil spring change now and again its still going strong and eats cheap and expensive ammo alike. I like shooting it more than my S&W 41.

Look at the Ruger single-six as well. Great for people new to shooting. It's single action, but it will literally live longer than you. Makes a great starter pistol imho.

+1. once a year, i take my rubber grip off & spray it downy w/ non-chlorinated brake cleaner. let it dry, then re-lube it w/ clp. done. i do a basic cleaning & lube after each trip to the range.

Im lookin to get a 22 as a new shooter as well. I really like the looks of the p22 and the 22a. It sounds like the Mark III is the gun to get but I dont like the barrel at all.

dont like the barrel? which one? they have a tapered, bull, ribbed and slab side. all in different lengths. i have a bull myself & its a well balanced shooter.

Actually the slab side is pretty cool looking. Im not a fan of the cylindrical look the other MarkIII barrels have though. Im leaning towards the 22a. Does anybody know a good website similar to The Best 9's for .22 pistols? I just want to get a good feel for what ones are out there. I am not looking to buy a cheap one either. Originally i planned on buying a 9mm but then I saw the difference in price for ammo [shocked].

rimfire central is a great .22 forum.
check out the browning buckmarks? a friend has one and likes it.
i shoot 22 more than anything now because ammo is soo high. you think 9mm is bad? dont get an ar! can drop $50 in ammo in minutes and not even realize it. a nice shooting 22 pistol and rifle are always a good thing to have.

Okay! Despite the fact that I dont like the look that much its pretty clear that the MarkIII is quite reputable and that Im definately going to have to see if I can get my hands on one before i knock it off my list of possible new guns.
