hello,

I'm new to the forum(s), I am interested in increasing my training for defensive pistol drills or conceal carry related drills if you will

I'm on the search to locate a club I can apply to that would support this sort of training
- shoot and move
- live fire drawing from concealments
- cover shooting
- etc...

I'm no special forces person, but I have recently completed a list of classes that are for conceal carry and I intend to continue my training

being located in Foxboro, finding somewhere within reasonable travel distance is ideal

thanks in advance

your own house with

snap caps...not sure of a range though...the range i go to down here doesn't want you drawing cause the firearm isn't necessarily pointed in a safe position when holstered but on a day where there aren't too many people i could do the rest of that stuff

There are ranges around, you'll have to drive though. Harvard has a great assortment of pits/ranges to do whatever you want.

Try not to support retard Fudd ranges with rules like that. Join a real range.

the problem is there are other people are on the same outdoor range with you so it's not exactly safe, especially if you have someone just beginning to learn these type of techniques so i'm glad these rules are in place, especially after seeing some of the clientele...i drive enough for work, not driving 90 miles 1 way to shoot...nor do i have time or desire to practice this type of training enough to get good...if i decide to i'll use snap caps at home and do everything else at the range

thanks for the input everyone, I will try and contact Harvard and Hopkinton to see if they would be facilities that would suffice.

I understand the concern for safety, frankly, that should always be a concern. there would be no way that anyone next to me on the range on any day would know my competence level, so I feel your points are rational and warranted, that being said, I still want a facility that I could operate safely and sharpen my new skills, instead of having to take a private class every time I want to practice skills I need to properly defend myself/others should all other less lethal options not be available

If anyone would like to suggest other facilities, I would also consider those and visit them to review

Second the Harvard suggestions. All of the things you listed are allowed in the action pits where USPSA and IDPA matches are held. Pick a pit, set up your targets properly so bullets hit the berm, and do whatever drills you like. Clean up after yourself!

So, you've never been to Harvard have you? You get to use an action pit by yourself. There are a bunch of them, along with separate traditional target ranges, 100yd rifle, full auto range, shotgun ranges, 200/300y rifle ranges etc.

Sounds like a nice place...if it were closer maybe I'd check it out

I'm in the same boat as OP. I've taken a bunch of classes for pistol and carbine but can't practice any of it at my club (Braintree). I've been to Harvard once with a friend and it was great! But its a bit of a hike for me from the south shore. Any other recommendations that people know of that might be more convenient to the south shore for this type of activity? Thanks!

Can't believe that I never spotted this thread before!

Take a look at Mansfield F&G, we do allow the kind of drills/practice you are asking about. As long as you maintain safety, you can do all of the above. That's also why I teach NRA's Personal Protection courses there and students can get $25 off their first year's membership.

I'm also a member of Braintree R&P and although it is a great club with great folks, the rules don't allow any of this and even the latest rules don't let you teach a NRA Basic Pistol course properly (in accordance with NRA's rules)! That is why I don't teach there (except the Moon Island training).

If someone wants a tour of Mansfield F&G, contact me off-line and if we can get our schedules to line up, I'd be more than happy to do so. NOTE: We still don't have use of the building, probably another 3-5 months before we'll have the clubhouse back. No indoor range and that isn't likely for a number of years to come (major fundraising needed to get that done). www.mansfieldfish.com

ETA: Harvard is an awesome club. If anyone lives within reasonable distance of that club, it should be a no-brainer to join up there.

Hopkinton and Harvard both fit your needs, have multiple outdoor pistol ranges, and an rules that are oriented towards safety, not keeping your shooting style limited to something you would have found on a range in the 50's.

Hopkinton is a lot closer (495 Exit 21A) that Harvard (495/Route 2). Both require sponsors, and Hopkinton is trying to slow membership growth a bit by limiting members to two sponsorees a year. Show up at a few Wed USPSA practices and you'll have no trouble finding a sponsor for Hopkinton.

I am a member of both clubs.
