Trying to get some thoughts/opinions on the Rossi single shot .223. I've found one brand new in the box with 9x40 adjustable scope(not sure of brand) for $169. Is this a good deal? Thanks

Depends on what you want the gun/scope to do.

Fun shooting at fairly close range? Probably a good value.

Prairie dogs at a half-mile? The gun may work, but you'll need to spend double that or more for the scope.

Can't afford an AR? Look very seriously at a Savage.

I would steer clear of Rossi. Their products are not well-made. For the same price, but without a scope, you could get a single-shot H&R?NEF "Handi-Rifle" that can easily be scoped. Best of all, the Handi-Rifle is made here in MA, so any repairs can be factory-performed and the rifle returned quickly.

This would definitely just be for fun at the range 100yds and less. I'm not planning to do any hunting with it.

There won't be any "fun" in shooting the Rossi unless you enjoy shoulder surgery.

I second the "Look very seriously at a Savage", hard to beat them for the money. Find a nice used one and save even more.

You might be able to pick up a Stevens model 200 as well in .223. They are a little cheaper than the newer Savages but basically the same design as the old pre-Accutrigger Savage 110's. Drop in a replacement trigger and they can be track drivers.

I picked up a model 200 in .270 a couple years back for $279. They were on sale.
