Is the M&P 9 (full size) able to fire +p ammo ? I ask because I picked up some Winchester PDX defender ammo and noticed after it is +p. Thanks for any insight on this.

Great thanks for the info. I viewed the link also which will be an excellent resource. Thanks again to noxin and sevenmag.

what do all these + signs mean?
+p vs p+ vs +p+ vs etc.,

i think there is more, does this have to do with pressure of the load?

Yes - +P (or +P+) is ammunition that exceeds the SAAMI standard pressure limits for a given cartridge. SAAMI defines +P pressure levels for only a few cartridges. Manufacturers have created +P ammo in cartridges that SAAMI doesn't list +P for, and +P+ loads for cartridges that SAAMI did define +P standards for. In any case, any variant of + and P means higher than industry SAAMI pressures.

Not always a bad thing, exceeding standards. For instance, the 45 Colt cartridge SAAMI spec has a max pressure low enough for hundred year old revolver designs. With modern revolvers that can stand a lot more pressure and can chamber 45 Colt, you can buy factory ammo loaded to exceed the SAAMI spec. Usually you'll see those marked something like 'only for use in modern revolvers'.

If you find yourself looking for 40 S&W +P, then you should just get the 10mm you should have bought.
