When my father graduated from Somerville high school he joined the Marines during the Korean War. He was at boot camp working in the buttes and waiting for the string to end so he could send up the target. When this projectile dropped in front of him. He picked it up and placed it in his pocket.
I played with this when I was a kid. The tip is just as hard and pointy as the day it fell to the ground. I assume it’s some type of an armor piercing round. To me the insert tip is unbelievably hard and pointy, like some kind of tool steel. I just can’t imagine anything stopping this, especially from the big 30-06 case and the long Garand barrel. I still have it to this day.

Thank you all for all of your military service.

Pretty cool story to go with it. .
I wonder if that's the same as the black tips cmp sold a few years back?

Enbloc beat me to it, but yea that's just a classic old M2 AP bullet. Was pretty much the norm during WW2 and the Korean War. I have a few bandoliers of it still. Takes Lvl IV body armor to stop it now, back then it took something armored with .5" of hardened armor plate to stop it. M2 AP will punch through .42" of armor plate at a minimum and an inch or more of mild steel. It was designed for defeating barriers and light armor like on half tracks and troop transports, shields on mounted machine guns, etc.

For comparison, 50 BMG AP ammo, in all of its forms, has to penetrate .875" of armor at 100yds and .75" of armor at 500yds. It will shoot through the side armor of an MRAP or Bradley with no problem or punch through a Lenco Bearcat or a Brinks truck without a problem...
