cleaned my M1A took it to the range. milspec 150 grain ammo M1A; will not eject and hard to extract, tried cleaning chamber and switch mags. same problem. ammo was stored in cold place but still in package: no contamination, if that means anything. any ideas. never happened before

Start from the ground up- make sure the gas system is turned on via the screw at the gas cylinder.

If that's OK, I would look towards an incompat between your chamber and ammo. Perhaps the chamber is cut tight, or the ammo (brass) was not sized properly.

Strip the rifle down to the barreled action and try to "drop" a round into the chamber. It should go in without any resistance and with a little tap, drop right out. Go from there.

Some things to consider:

What exactly did you do when cleaning?
Is this a new batch of the milsurp ammo or are you shooting from the same batch when everything was functioning OK?
Did you check the gas cylinder plug? Could be loose or perhaps cross-threaded.

Too soon for sell it and buy an AK?[coffee]

List it for sale in one of Reptiles threads. New, never shot, functions perfectly, preban, $10,000. I know what I have, no low bidders.[rofl2]

I guess without being there, are the rounds physically getting stuck or do they come out easily with a rod down the barrel? If it's surplus ammo, could the ammo be out of spec just enough to cause the problem?

Have you recently tried a different manufacturer?

Lots of little things that could stack to cause the problem. I'd check the extractor setup.

This is where id start too. After the obvious ones like mags and ammo. Im far from an M1A expert but if its not extracting, and its (according to the op) "hard to extract" then it sounds like the extractor is working correctly. If the spent brass is easy to rod out of the chamber id look at something in the action hanging up like a bent op rod etc.

I'm just thinking that's a nebulous term. Could it be the extractor isn't biting hard enough to do everything, so the ejector doesn't get a clean hit, causing the problems? If the rounds pop out of the chamber with a rod easily bouncing on the shell, then I'd look other places. If you have to put some oomph on the rod, I'd look at the chamber or ammo.

If the extractor isnt getting a good bite im sure you'd see evidence of it on the case rim somehow. Again, im not an M14 pro, but its a big heavy old school system if the extractors not grabbing brass fully i bet itll leave evidence. IIRC from my days of fondness for m14s, if you shoot too spicy of a round through it, it can bend the op rod which will cause issues.

My brand new m1a loaded didn't like magtech 308s, prob cause of tight tolerance. After firing, spent cases wouldn't always extract cause they were stuck. Federal and Winchester ammo was my solution.

I almost forgot. some years ago Springfield Inc. had a issue with the bolt rollers. Something about the roller stud on the bolt being improperly finished. I found this out when i took the bolt out of receiver for routine maint. and the roller just fell off of the bolt. I found something online where they acknowledged the issue and had me send the rifle back to them for repair. See if you can check the bolt roller to make sure its ok.

Not related to this thread directly, but if you like M14's (yes, USGI M14's), stay tuned. That's all I can say for now.
Yeah, you can't leave us hanging like that LOL. Doesn't the AFT deem 'once a MG, always a MG'? Though I know M14 receiver heels have been welded onto M1A receivers.

I know that was cruel, but trust me: if it pans out, we will all be happy.

After reflecting on my mentioning that: if it comes to fruition, I think it was a humble brag that I knew more than anybody else, before anybody else.
I'm not proud of it. I'm very shallow.

LOL nice work if it happens. I checked the usual forums that would be blowing up over this and there are crickets a plenty. Even if only another release of parts kits I'd be pretty happy, because...

I have a bunch of M1's and only the one Bula M14 that I built. One of our forum members had a very nice USGI stock, appears to have some 'flame' in it once I clean it up. He offered a deal I could not refuse for two. One goes on a build, the other a spare. No rush but whenever I see a good opportunity for built material I'll pull the trigger.
