My point is that there are a lot of things that are against the law but are not necessarily morally wrong. For example, under federal law, alcohol is legal but marijuana is illegal. Is marijuana somehow evil or bad but alcohol is not? I don’t think so. I think they are both bad, but criminalizing them is even worse for society.
Are there some laws which are truly about evil? Sure, things like murder, assault, etc. But others like keeping a striped bass 1” under the limit — is that morally wrong? Is owning a post-ban standard capacity magazine in MA morally wrong? I don’t think so. So just because something is illegal doesn’t necessarily mean it is evil/bad/immoral.
In one of the Jesse Stone movies, a young girl is talking to police chief Jesse Stone about this topic (alcohol vs marijuana):
Michelle Genest: You said stuff was legal or illegal. Well, what about it being right or wrong?
Jesse Stone: I'm not in the right and wrong business. I'm in the legal and illegal business.
