model 19 trigger pull/cylinder advancement

okay gentlemen--i've got this model 19 that is misbehaving. first it began as a more difficult trigger pull in double action, then progressed to cocking the hammer back for single action as well, and as of now the cylinder can be difficult to rotate back into the frame and you have to squeeze so hard pulling the trigger is damn near impossible.

i took off the side plate and cleared some shit out of there and oiled it up real good but the problem is still present and shows no signs of improvement. any suggestions? no clue what happened to this thing!

how'd you correct this? did you do it at home or did you have to send it to a gunsmith/S&W?

i'll take another look, i think i only gave it a quick wipe-down there, i did pop off and remove the cylinder from the arm and clean out the garbage that was on the outside and inside.
 
What I found personally, I was able to give it a real good hand tightening, supporting the cylinder in my off-hand, and it has held for the 500 or so rounds I have put through my S&W Model 10-5. I have read Brownells sells a tool to tighten it, and people put a small amount of locktite on the threads. The hazard I believe is over-tightening and risk bending the extractor rod.
 
got a link to the tool? i'm pretty green when it comes to playing with wheel guns as this is the only one i own now, and i've never had to really do any actual mechanical work on any of the ones i've owned.
 
i didn't remove it, just the arm and cylinder with everything still in one piece. what would it mean if it is/isn't and how i'd diagnose the problem with the gun?
 
Besides the loose extractor rod, it needs to be clean underneath the star on the end of the rod. My model 18 is very fussy about keeping that area clean or it will bind up while trying to cock it.
