Hey guys, I am sure someone has done this before just wanted an opion on who to buy from. After searching the internets it looks like I will go with either S & J hardware or a Choate extension tube for my shotgun. Just curuios if anyone here has bought either and how the prodcut performs. (I own the 18.5" model)

I have read on the Choat modle its actually a +1, but if you use the Mossberg stock follower it will indeed be a true + 2.

Thanks for the input.

switch to the 20". barrel, mag tube, spring, and retainer can all be purchased from mossberg. and you get to stick a knife on the end. badassss.

I have the Choate Mossberg 590/835 +1 extension kit, along with a spring and aluminum follower from Brownells. I believe the Choate kit comes with a spring that maybe you can cut to size or whatever, it's been awhile so I don't recall with full clarity. But I get +2 out of the whole setup.

Also I think the Choate kit came with a barrel clamp w/sling mount, but I might have gotten that elsewhere.

Not all of us can be as cool as atilla.

I Have the Choate and it is plus 2 if you change the follower. Works great. I also ordered a high power spring and cut it down to 22" that way there is less spring in the tube with the same force.

For defensive shotguns, the shorter the better. I will take 18.5 with an 8 round capacity any-day over a 20"

i don't use the shotgun for HD so it's not a problem. i'm pretty good with it, but the disadvantage is that it doesn't have the ghost rings that a factory model does. bead only.

I think you can get it either way. My 590 is ghost ring but there is nothing wrong with a good old bead!

I did this exact thing.

Mossy 590A1 18.5" with Choate "+1" extension, stock follower, Wolff Extra Power Spring cut to 23" - this gives you the desired +2.

v3.0 with Choate extension and Hogue 12" LOP stock and forend. The standard ~14" LOP stock was just too long.

I much prefer the look of the wood furniture. But I'll take the much improved handling characteristics of the shorter stock over looks. Wish somebody made a wood stock with 12" LOP.

Chop saw! I've cut all my shotties down. My o/u with the walmut stock was a b**** with an old blade, but got it done. Then a little refitting of the buttpads.

Agreed that is a great looking shotgun. I have also read that some add another barrel clamp to keep the extension from shifting around/moving if you whacked it against a wall. Do you feel that is necessary? I am not going to be clearing rooms with my 590, as long as it can take being thrown on a table or two im fine with it.

There's a guy on YouTube that does alright with the bead on a 590A1. Hickok45 is his handle. This might be one of his vids http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp5NHZlFwEE

You guys are killin me. I had already given up hope for the classic wood look... now you guys are making me want it again! Damnit. Now I have to go buy a saw.

How do you "refit" the buttpad? I imagine you'd have to basically shave the bottom end of it until you got the edges to match up with the new cut? So you'd have to shave a good amount...

Thanks! Honestly, I thought about installing the barrel clamp that came with the Choate extension... but after I screwed the extension on... it's pretty damn solid. I didn't feel the need for the clamp at all. Even after multiple range trips and over 200 rounds of shot, buck, and slugs. The extension was still tight. Of course, I haven't thrown it onto any tables or banged it into any walls clearing my house... but I don't think there'd be any problems if I did.

Alright. So... since you guys reminded me how much I prefer the wood furniture... and since I don't have any of the tools/equipment that I'd need to cut a stock down, and resize the buttpad... I found a guy out in AZ who had a bunch of wood shotgun stocks and was willing to cut one down for me and refit a pad.

I just got the stock today and it looks great. It's MUCH better than I could have done. Looks like it came from the factory this way.

LOP is ~12.5 inches.

Awesomeness.

Loving the wood furniture! While we're sharing, this is the 590A1 w/ a +2 extension, CDM MTC light mount, FourSevens Quark QT2LX flashlight. Uncle Joe should be proud.

Nice. I use a CDM MTR mount and love it. I keep a Streamlight TLR-1 on there.
