mossberg 590a1 question

I just bought one, after taking it apart I noticed brown on the inside of the receiver side of the barrel. Looks like rust but not sure. I ran a brush a few times and a clean patch and it's still there. What do you guys think.

Rust or cooked on grease. Use some 00 steel wool with some oil. Should take it right off.

how stiff? if it's brand new i'd suppose that can be expected. mine took a little bit of time to smooth out, but it's like butter now.

My other 12 gauge pump is a Browning BPS which was real smooth and by comparison almost effortless out of the box.
The a1's pump takes 2 or 3 times as much more effort to cycle even after cleaning and lubing.

Other than the a1 I haven't shot a different pump but I will agree it's a little stiff. I just figured that's how they are.

The 590 is a combat shotgun. Run it dirty for a couple hundred rounds. Come to think of it, I never clean mine really, just a barrel swab now and again. It will smooth out.

I think I cleaned mine once....mainly because I was bored and decided to clean everything that weekend.
