Did a search and couldn't find the info I am looking for.

I currently have a Mossberg 500 in a tactical HD configuration, but would like to start busting clays, shooting trap, etc.
I recently purchased a Knox Stock and wondering whether I should go for a
24" or 28" after-market barrell?

Also, where is the best place to purchase. Was thinking Cabellas online, but the barrells are like $160!

Any help is most appreciated.

Update - I purchased the 28" Mossberg aftermarked barrell as described above from Cabellas. In attempting to swap out my 18 1/2" HD barrell, I noticed that the takedown screw is larger than the hole on my existing mag tube. Any ideas how to fix this problem? Do I need to purchase a new magazine tube? I thought this stuff was plug and play?

Any help or ideas would be most appreciated.

If it's a Mossberg brand barrel, it should just fit, if not call Mossberg on Monday, and they will make it right. I have been through 4-5 different barrels on my 500 without issue, they all fit.

It is a Mossberg brand barrell. I will call them on Monday. Thanks for the help on this!

Is it the 5 shot tube or the 7(?) shot? I have the standard tube with mine and the barrel attachment point is set right for that length tube. I thought the HD ones came with the larger mag tube, so you would have to have the barrel with that attachment point.

It is the 5-shot tube.

I just got off the phone with Mossberg Customer Service. Apparently with the 500 Tactical Cruiser Model the Takedown screw is different and won't fit my existing Mag tube. So, now I need to get a new magazine tube so that the 28" barrell will fit.

My whole plan was to have one shotgun that I can use for HD as well as to smash clays. Turns out with the money I invested in a Knox Collapsable Stock, the longer barrell, and now (apparently) new mag tube, I would have been better off just buying a NEW FRIGGIN' SHOTGUN!!!

Any idea where the best place would be to look for a new mag tube and how much more $$ I am looking at? Thanks again.

Update. I bought the new magazine tube and it fits perfectly. I was a bit nervous that I would have to do some major work to get the factory tube out, but I was able to unscrew it without the use of any tools.

So, all in all, I now have a Mossberg 500 that I can use for HD and smashing clays. But at a major cost. The Knoxx Stock cost me $120, the 28" accu barrell cost me $140 (sale th. Cabellas), and the mag tube cost me $40. This doesn't include shipping.

So, the lesson here is buy a new friggin gun if you have the Mossberg 500 Tactical cruiser for HD and save yourself the trouble.

Horrible,

Since the Knoxx stock is for recoil reduction, isn't the decision to buy that completely independent of whether or not the use is HD or sporting clays?

It seems that your cost to 'switch' to a longer barrel cost you $180...still significantly less than the cost of a second gun and the Knoxx stock benefits you regardless of how you use the gun.

Am I missing something?

.

shipping is slowly becomeing a way of life. If you cant find it locally you dont have a choice. When ever I order anything from major chain stores I always ask how to get free shipping. Some have a price point of ex: 200.00 or more free shipping. I also ways check out kittery trading post BucketObarrels. They used to have a corner to the right with many used parts. Have not been there in almost three years.
You can always sell the barrel at a later date for not much loss.
Soon if you get Claybust'nitis you will be looking into "trap" guns. Then you will find yourself spending even more. Check out http://www.joeletchenguns.com/ for some nice trap guns. this is only the begining like any firearms, you got the budget theres a gun for you.

Sounds like you have a nice setup now, much cheaper than buying a new gun.

I have two 500's, super reliable gun, been made forever now. They always go bang when I pull.

Nope. Not missing anything. Can use the Knoxx Stock (And I didn't have to get this stock, there are cheaper ones) for HD as well.

Just was ticked that I had to put up extra cake for the new mag tube. I thought that all Mossberg 500s had the same ones.

If I had to do it over again, I would have probably bought a gun in a clay-busting configuration, and converted to HD instead of the other way around. 18 1/2" barrells tend to run cheaper.

Good to hear. Makes me feel a bit better knowing that I made a pretty good investment with the Mossberg 500.

Definately excited about the setup. Can't wait to get to the range for a test run.[smile]
