Depends on the day of the week and time of year. The subways are generally more susceptible to issues in Summer months. I used to take it every day until about a year ago. The line runs slightly SE (Braintree) to NW (Alewife). I still see their delay notices. The 3 most common are 1) stuck/disabled train 2) Police activity 3) Medical issue. It is also probably the most heavily used of all the subway lines. But if you're getting on at one of the Quincy stops in AM you'll probably have no issue getting a seat. Going home from Tufts you have to do Orange line to Downtown Crossing....on certain days you may have to stand for a couple stops on the Redline. During rush hours they average every 5-8 minutes. Off peak they'll run less frequently. The good news is the Orange Line (which used to be shitshow) is now fairly decent with new cars and track updates. The line splits at JFK headed south from Boston. One branch goes into Braintree the other into Dorchester/Mattapan (some not so great neighborhoods). So only half the cars will be going down the line toward Quincy. So the short answer is it's "fairly" reliable, but when things go sideways they can go down the tubes in a hurry.
